Bears leaning to Orton at QB

It seems pretty obvious which way the Bears are going at quarterback. With 20 days until the start of the regular season, all signs are pointing to Kyle Orton being the starter Sept. 7 at Indianapolis. Coach Lovie Smith didn't give any indication Saturday night after a 29-26 overtime loss at Seattle, but did he have to? Orton put together a 51-yard drive at the end of the first half, setting up a 39-yard Robbie Gould field goal after Seahawks cornerback Kelly Jennings knocked a touchdown pass from Devin Hester's hands. Those were the first points the offense put on the board after Rex Grossman started the game. Grossman didn't stand a chance as he was ransacked by an aggressive Seahawks defense that some Bears felt brought a few more blitzes than is customary for a preseason game.

Isn't that a "True Chicagoian's" theme saying every year when it comes to the Bears....The choice between Orton and Grossman is not much of a choice at all. Why don't they get Culpepper? Or Simms? Or anyone?

PS-Could you please burn my retinas out too Racer X?

It all comes down to how well their D plays. He ain't no Payton Manning but can manage the game if given enough protection in the pocket.

August 18, 2008  08:03 AM ET

It doesn't matter. The Bears haven't been relevant since '85.

August 18, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Um, I think a Superbowl appearance brings a lot of relevance to their team. You don't just get there by lottery.

I hate to disagree with you DCruiser, but these two can't even manage a game with all the protection in the world. They are incompitent at there position. Every year it is the same with the Bears. There defense must play up to and above there potential to have any chance to over-ride the poor offensive performance by these two underachievers. What a said way of football life you Chicago fans must live.

Agreed! Well said! Will they make the playoffs this year? Who knows? I think their D line will be OK but, I am dying of curiosity to see what kind of O line will they have. A lot of unknowns on that side of the ball, including their running game!

Sad indeed! But always optimistic. Although optimism is becoming harder to maintain with Angelo as GM and the McCaskeys as owners. They don't give a rip as long as the money keeps pouring in. There's never a shortage of people waiting in line to get their hands on any tickets they can to see the Bears "play" in these parts!

August 18, 2008  08:28 AM ET

and there, inside the glass case, with the words, "In Case of Emergency" stenciled across the glass, sits Rex Grossman, waiting. Matter of time until Chicago's management puts Rex in the starter's role again. Matter of time until the season gets flushed..

August 18, 2008  08:33 AM ET

And just think, if fan support is like that now, how great it would be if you actually had a real QB......and a real chance....and didn't have to rely on defense and Hester.....

August 18, 2008  08:34 AM ET

might be another long season for the Bears

August 18, 2008  08:57 AM ET

It doesn't matter which one they start, they are both useless. The Bears should have drafted at least one QB in the draft. Even a seventh rounder would have given them a better chance at winning as the starting QB.

By the way, are there any Bears fans that did not already give up on the upcoming season back in April after they failed to draft a QB "of the future".

August 18, 2008  09:19 AM ET

I think Orton could manage the offense without the big mistakes if the Bears had a competent o-line and a good running game. Unfortunately, the o-line looks pretty bad with Williams out with back surgery and they have a rookie RB starting. They have no number one or number two receivers. Regardless of who is starting at QB, they are NOT in a position to succeed.

August 18, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Another thing, If Mike Brown goes down this year, get used to seeing the safeties getting scorched. They are again counting on Brown to be heathly this season. McGowan and Payne have both had injuries as well. Once your safeties go down in cover-2 defense that defense will not be in the top 15. On a positve note, at least if you want to see Archulta play this year, you'll have to watch a Raiders game.

August 18, 2008  09:32 AM ET

who cares who their starter is the only bowl they have to worry about this year is the "toilet bowl"!!!!

August 18, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Can Chicago start both QB's at the same time? One takes the snap and the other blocks, or the RB takes the snap and both QB's block for him. Or the center keeps the snap and the 2 QB's and the RB push him for a yard gain every single down.

I am saying that just because I like to watch comedy on T.V.

Talk about damned if you do....and damned if you don't......
