Rays give Hamilton bases-loaded walk

Josh Hamilton was given one of the highest levels of respect a slugger can get from an opposing manager in Sunday's 7-4 loss to Tampa Bay: He was intentionally walked with the bases loaded. Hamilton, with 28 homers and 113 RBIs, came up in the bottom of the ninth as the potential tying run. Rays manager Joe Maddon unconventionally walked him to score Chris Davis and bring up Marlon Byrd as the potential winning run. Reliever Dan Wheeler struck out Byrd to end the game. "Just looking at potential risk factor, I could much more easily envision or imagine Hamilton tying it up than the alternatives," Maddon said. "Based on all the stuff there, we chose to walk him. ... I just wanted to go that way. I didn't want to see Hamilton there."

What a risky move... Byrd had been on fire the previous week or so.

August 18, 2008  07:12 AM ET

Almost seems like a no brainer. Unless of course, Byrd hits a HR. I like the move. A manager more worried about winning a game then getting second guessed if the move came up craps? Cool.

August 18, 2008  07:23 AM ET

Rays are playing ball.. hard to second guess them right now

August 18, 2008  07:56 AM ET

That could have backfired real easily and the manager would look like a total doush.

August 18, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Balls move. I like it. Guess the winning ways start from the top. You think Dan Wheeler just became Maddons best friend after that strike out?

August 18, 2008  08:24 AM ET

The Rays are going to the World Series.

It's my understanding that managment has arranged to give all the Rays "4-0" rings to commemorate that historic walk.

August 18, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Play the percentages and don't let the big man beat you. Talk about cliches.

August 18, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Seriously, if the Rays win the World Series sports should be suspended. That town is the furthest thing from a sports town....and now they'll have 3 titles in 3 sports in less than 10 years. Shoot me.

I agree balls move. I have seen it done before but not very often, obviously.
And not lately either, obviously. I like it, too.

Can we shoot you now and just get it over with regardelss what the Rays do?

August 18, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Man, will anything go wrong for Tampa this year?

As long as it's a murder suicide then feel free. I'm willing to make a sacrifice for the better of the nation.

Fine i will send out my hit man to take care of you and then he will off himself. Kind of a waste of a resource but what the hey.

August 18, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Gutsy move.....but I like it. Play the percentages.

I think I have only seen this once before where someone was walked intentionally with the bases loaded.

No no no....if I'm going you have to go too. No third parties involved that's for mobsters and spies.

August 18, 2008  10:14 AM ET

I would have walked him too...

August 18, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Byrd has been on fire for a couple of weeks now. plus the Rays don't have a great BP... Shows alot of respect for Hamilton, and what he has done this year.. i don't think they would do it against any other team

August 18, 2008  10:17 AM ET

I would've walked him, too, with Marlon Byrd coming up.
