Gibbs teams caught cheating

Joe Gibbs Racing's NASCAR rivals had little sympathy after two of the organization's Nationwide Series teams were caught Saturday trying to alter the outcome of chassis dyno testing at Michigan International Speedway. NASCAR inspectors discovered the two Toyota teams, which competed in Saturday's race with Tony Stewart and Joey Logano driving, had placed magnets on the cars' accelerator pedals. The magnets, at least in theory, would prevent the pedals from being fully depressed, which would limit the engines' output and distort the horsepower data. NASCAR confiscated the two engines and was able to perform accurate dynamometer tests, said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition. Pemberton said any penalties would be announced this week. "Their **** needs to be kicked out of there. They're shiftless," Chevrolet team owner Richard Childress said of those responsible at JGR. "They (NASCAR) just need to do something." Ford owner Jack Roush, who has often been critical of Toyota's NASCAR efforts - particularly of the Japanese automaker's move to the Sprint Cup Series last season - was equally disgusted. Roush actually spent more time faulting NASCAR for creating the problem by allowing Toyota to operate with newer engines in the series - which promped NASCAR to reduce the Toyota's horsepower last month. "It's a loop that's unaffordable," Roush said. "I can't afford to do a new engine for Nationwide right now. NASCAR can establish parity with the tests that they've done or they can leave it be."

Don't think this will force NASCAR to actually PUNISH Toyota, not that it matters. The Manufacturers Cup in Nationwide and Cup was decided last year when Toyota signed on the dotted line...

This is not about Toyota, It is about Gibbs Cheating., and how they have been winning.
Think we will hear from Gibbs that this was a one time deal?
Gibbs catching up with the Hendrick's ? LOL
I'll bet there are heavy fines & points involved with this.

August 18, 2008  06:06 AM ET

August 18, 2008  08:15 AM ET

This actually sounds more brazen than M Waltrips fuel tampering last year. Wait....they are both Toyotas. Chad Knaus is an angel lol

August 18, 2008  08:15 AM ET

I hope this is not a true reflection on Joe Gibbs himself because it will really contradict his "christian" beliefs.

August 18, 2008  08:17 AM ET

If you aint cheatin you aint tryin

August 18, 2008  08:27 AM ET

You gotta wonder what else JGR has been doing, especially on the Cup side with all of Kyle Busch's wins. And no I'm not going after little Busch on this one. Good ole' JD sounded so cavalier about the whole thing and I'm sure he'll gladly pay the money, but will keep all the wins. SO much for the "honesty" that has been so publicized for Joe Gibb's Racing and all the hoopla about practicing their religious beliefs. My point is simply that the pedestal is gone and these guys are like every other team that will cheat to win so long as they can get away with it. What a classy group!

August 18, 2008  08:28 AM ET

I missed the prerace this weekend for the Cup Series...was this mentioned at all?

August 18, 2008  08:34 AM ET

LOL

August 18, 2008  08:43 AM ET

The Pam Anderson / Kid Rock wedding was an important part of American History...........hahaha

August 18, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Gibbs said that he would handle this "In House" and punish those involved.
Some heads need to roll if it is indeed employees, as in fired and charges being filled. If names don't come out in public, you can bet it will be a cover up.

August 18, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Jackman, I saved this Avatar of Maria Just for you!
Enjoy, LOL

August 18, 2008  08:46 AM ET

August 18, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Weird but thanks floatman.

I say doc Kyle 200 points. Looks like the chase really boils down to Kyle and Carl. Wow - 13 wins between them.

August 18, 2008  08:52 AM ET

I know JGR wants to be just like Hendrick..... just a few penalties more and they're there...
