The Los Angeles Dodgers have re-acquired Cooperstown-bound righthander Greg Maddux in a trade with the Padres, SI.com has confirmed. This marks the second time Dodgers GM Ned Colletti has acquired Maddux in a mid-season trade. In 2006, Maddux went 6-3 after going to the Dodgers and helped lead them into the playoffs. Colletti is hoping for similar results this time around. Maddux, 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA for the last-place Padres, cleared waivers earlier in the month. The San Diego resident, who also has kept a home up the coast in Dana Point, about 60 miles southwest of Dodger Stadium, approved a trade only to Los Angeles.

This should have happened earlier. As soon as the Dodgers made the play for Manny, they had to know they were still in need of a starter.

Non-story.

And so they remain.

Maddox can throw a mean 40mph curveball. What is this guy, like 50?

**** 7TH!!!

Bad move on the dodgers part...IMO all he is doing is bringing a great name that is much closer to Cooperstown than a World Series. Purchasing big names doesn't win championships....ask Steinbrenner.

More like 44 but clearly a leader and still throws nasty stuff. This is a good move for the dodgers. His experience alone is productive.

My Padre fan heart is hurt with this one, greatly. But my baseball fan head realized this transaction was a "when" and not an "if" as soon as Penny was gone. Thanks for the memories Mad Dog. Sorry there was no run support for you.
See folks, the Padres are a factor in the NL West race! By trading away effective players in the division...

I would share this on my blog on ??? AffluentMeet.Com ??? It's an online dating service where wealthy singles can join who are looking for younger unattached people to enjoy their wealthy lifestyle with.

So you're saying you think Maddux has one last hurrah in him before retiring, and this change of scenery is just the thing to render it out of him? Don't know if I can fully buy into that, but who knows, you may be right.

August 19, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Maddux is one of the greatest of his era and his numbers stack up to almost anyone to have ever pitched.

He has to hang them up though, like yesterday. His numbers are tarnishing a legacy. Classic case of a star who never knew when to hang them up.

This will help the Dodgers......won't put them over the top, but it will bolster their rotation for the stretch.

The Dodgers are a symbol or white racism

August 19, 2008  10:01 AM ET

His actual home is in Dana Point, which is half way between Dodger Stadium and Petco Park..... he's kept his options open there..... if he keeps any home in San Diego, it's just for convenience, but he's only an hour away from either ballpark from Dana Point..... not counting traffic..... convenient for him getting traded to whichever team is better....

August 19, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Well I guess getting him couldnt hurt...Cubs dumped that old timer a awhile back, hes done for.

August 19, 2008  10:11 AM ET

3.99 ERA...he might be able to contribute, even if he is not their savior.

Maddux knows how to pitch. He will help most pitching staffs in MLB. He also handles the bat well, so he won't be an automatic out in the 9 hole. Nice pick up and just maybe they can make a run.
