The Cowboys have done a background check on Miami quarterback John Beck, but they have not had talks with the Dolphins regarding a potential trade for the 2007 second rounder, according to two sources. According to the sources, the Dolphins contacted the Cowboys - and other teams - about Beck shortly after coming to terms with Pennington. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones has expressed a desire to find a long-term backup to Tony Romo with Brad Johnson turning 40 next month.

Maybe the league should do background checks on all the players to weed out the criminals BEFORE they get hired.

August 19, 2008  07:52 AM ET

Now stop that LCB ... you're suggesting the league do something that makes sense. Quit dreaming ...

You got to be kidding. The team that signs Pacman is doing a background check on a player they are interested in? If they would take him, then just what in someones background would stop them from going after a player? Unless the guy is part of a terrorist cell, then I do not see anything that would hold up any transaction.

Cowboys had their young third-string QB last season when Matt Moore was on the roster. They released him prior to the season start (last cut) and the Panthers picked him up.
The former UCLA and Oregon State QB had a good training camp last year and started three games for the Panthers last season and was 2-1. His only loss came against the Cowboys.

They tried to sneak him onto their practice squad, didn't work.

Does Beck have a criminal record?

-Loki- | 08/19/08, 08:29 AM

Not that I know of.

August 19, 2008  09:13 AM ET

Beck have a criminal record? Doubtful, he's a morman right? Guess you just need to check the hall of records for multiple marriage certificates.

But hey, the fins got some cowboy trash, so why not return the favor.

no criminal record for Beck he played at BYU. he is not a bad QB at all he is just very young and does not have a ton of expericne.
