Beijing Shaq statue confuses Chinese
In the heart of Beijing is a giant statue of Shaquille O'Neal. It sits outside the east gate of Chaoyang Park, Shaq looking over the basketball courts and soccer fields that sprawl across a massive playground. Why? Why would somebody go to such extremes to shadow the repressed locals with a monument to a guy who, even with his four NBA championships, is best known for clanking foul shots and carrying a grudge? The answer can be found in an adjoining sign above the gate's entrance: Li Ning Sport Park. This part of the area -- filled with basketball courts and pingpong tables -- is sponsored by Li Ning, a Chinese sportswear giant, sort of an Asian Nike. The company is named after its founder, Li Ning, the former Olympic gold-medal gymnast who lighted the torch during the Beijing opening ceremony after floating fearlessly around the stadium. Li Ning commissioned the statue of Shaq two years ago after O'Neal signed a five-year endorsement deal.

where are the quotes from chinese people to say they are confused?..........the first paragraph kind of contradicts the second part.
The statue is just a form of marketing....and hope......one day Shaq will come from the heavens with piles of money and food to save....unlike Li Ning who could have cured the peoples poverty with a statue of Kobe......
this article is wack

The LA Times wrote it - of course they find some way to hate on Shaq amidst all the great stories of this year's Olympics.

Plus, he's the closest thing to a Sumo wrestler we have in the NBA. Wait, that's Japanese... Maybe Shaq will convert to Chinese.

It's Shaq bashing time again.
Shaq is in the news even though he did nothing. This is a ploy just to make the Fan Nation go crazy and stir things up. This is just an advertising and recognition for the Li Ning merchendise. This article did not explain anything about the statue. This statue was probably made during Shaq's prime on the Lakers championships. At that time Shaq was the best player in the world w/ some rings to back it up.

Boy, that's a shot through Yao Ming. He's a dang legend in his own country and they put up Shaq's statue. I'll give Shaq his credit for his early career but he does need to go. Thankfully, my heaters got rid of that anchor.
Lemme guess, the biggest music store has a statue of Michael Jackson staring down at it. Or maybe at the largest child day care...

Yao Ming has to win a few rings before he gets a statue but he should have gotten one before Shaq.
Does show that the Chinese love the game though (or at least Li Ning does).

I doubt the chinese are confused at all, they have weird stuff everywhere, its their culture and its pretty cool. Look at the olympic gardens and all the amazing, yet unnecessary things in someone elses eyes that they build. The guy built a park and statue in honor of an athlete he respected and is now employing, whats confusing about that.
This writer should be the one to end his career, then Shaq in a year or two... Shaq will be remembered for being the most dominant player of his generation. Of course we have to put of his generation because too many people will come tossing names in the hat of guys who played against bums in the 50's and what not. As a big man he was pretty much invincible for a long time. Now everyone jumps all over him because his body is breaking down and he cant put up the numbers, he is no longer compared to other big men just himself in his prime which is kind of a tough comparison.

What the article failed to mention was that on the statue's arse, a statement written in Chinese that says: "Kobe, how does this taste?"
