Yankees may call on Pavano

There could be a Carl Pavano sighting for the Yanks this weekend. General manager Brian Cashman acknowledged the Yankees are considering either Phil Hughes or Pavano to assume the fifth starter's role Saturday in Baltimore. Hughes seemed like the probable choice as Pavano's 30-day rehab run is up Aug. 27, one week from tomorrow. But Cashman has been impressed with Pavano's rehab progress from Tommy John surgery. Pavano threw six innings Sunday for Double-A Trenton and Cashman said: "He's close to being ready."

Good. His pitching confirms they do not make the playoffs.

Hahahahahahahahaha!

Desperate times call for desperate measures.......but I didn't think the Yanks were THAT desperate.

Take your time explaining that one, dont hurt yourself.

Make sure there's an extra ambulance at the Stadium. He'll probably pull a hammy getting off the train.
Any chance Ted Kennedy can pick him up at the airport?

August 19, 2008  08:13 AM ET

I'll trade Pavano for a cheeseburger. Any takers?

August 19, 2008  08:15 AM ET

That's right, bring Pavano back a week early, cut his rehab short! He can take it!

August 19, 2008  08:16 AM ET

You'd probably only get one of the 7-11 microwave burgers that no one eats unless they're hammered. And you'd have to pay his salary.

What's up, Cyder? What do you say, wouldn't you rather have a look at the future of the Yankees than at its embarassing past?

How's it goin Atro?
I'd rather see Kennedy and Huges then let this idiot. Every start is important if we're going to find out if those 2 will ever be MLB pitchers. I can just se Pavano starting the last game ever at the Stadium. Disgusting

August 19, 2008  08:40 AM ET

What's he at now $2000. a pitch? What a bargain, but there are more bargains out there....Clemens for the ultimate comeback!

August 19, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Mr. Glass returns.

August 19, 2008  08:44 AM ET

This is not a desperate measure at all by the Yankees. They knew Carl Pavano was going to come back from Tommy John surgery sometime in August or September. If he pitches well, then some team who needs pitching pretty badly will try and sign him to a free agent contract.
Maybe the Yanks then can receive something back in the way of a supplemental draft pick for their $40 million.

Signing Sidney Ponson was a desperate move, but having Pavano pitch again was part of the plan all along.

Als,now that Ponson has pitched effectively, he alos will probably sign a free agent contract somewhere else and the Yankees will get another supplemental draft pick.

That's an interesting question, particularly if that game is meaningful. Do you tweak the rotation and go with Pettite, maybe Moose, for that final game, for the historic value? Maybe Hughes with an eye to the future? Maybe Ponson to highlight the beer and nacho combos at the new stadium?

This is exactly what the need for a miracle finish..........uh................no.
