Will Dolphins dump Brown?

ESPN's Chris Mortensen has just reported (sort of) that the Dolphins might get rid of Ronnie Brown before this season begins. I'm saying Mortensen sort of reported it because, frankly, he backed into the whole subject. The Monday Night Countdown show was doing one of its cheesey segments, this one called 'Sink or Swim,' in which the pundits were giving their opinion whether certain players would succeed or fail this year. Mortensen was asked about Ricky Williams and while talking about how he would "swim," he went on to say that the Dolphins are so pleased with Williams he "would not be surprised if Ronnie Brown sinks," to the point where "he is playing with another team this season." Mortensen's reason for Brown being out of here is that the player is "struggling" this preseason. Wow. Before I go on, let me tell you that Mortensen was at Miami's preseason game against Jacksonville Saturday evening and he did spend time talking to general manager Jeff Ireland. So one presumes this comes from Ireland as the source and not just out of sheer speculation. Having said all that, it is true that Brown is clearly not Miami's best RB now. That is Williams.

miami would love to have depth at RB something they rarely have. so why in the world would miami get rid of brown?

not going to happen. and if it does, miami needs to fire their GM.

So this is a Miami reporter speculating on what Mortenson speculated? That there is some solid reporting!

Give me a break! Ronnie hasn't been struggling at all, unless you consider being pretty much game ready 19 months after an ACL injury struggling.

Ronnie may be behind Ricky now because Ronnie is coming of his injury, but a couple more months and Ronnie will be the engine of the R & R Express!!

The only worse idea would be to then pick up C. Benson.

August 19, 2008  07:54 AM ET

That should have been ten (10) months, not nineteen (19). Dang laptops!!

Ricky and Cedrick together....sounds like a boat party to me!

Thats funny pw !!!!!!!!!!!!

no way that flippin' happens. that would be the dumbest move since trading taylor. or releasing zach thomas. or trading chris chambers. or adewale ogunleye. or patrick surtain. or sam madison.. ah, you get the point.

I've been saying this for awhile now - Ricky will be leading - or very near the top - the league in rushing this season... how soon everyone forgets how dominant he can be.... and he's fresh alright...

i was at ricky's "joint" last week.

I don't believe one word of what Chris Mortensen says...Everyone knows the key to success is to have two quality backs in the backfield so the Tuna is not that crazy to trade a back like Brown....Mortensen was asked his opinion and he gave it...you gotta remember one thing about Mortensen...he was the same guy who said that teams would be sorry for passing on WR Matt "Snow White" Jones and we all see how that turned out!

August 19, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Isn't it speculation to make assumptions about what 2 people might have spoken about with absolutely no supporting evidence?

August 19, 2008  08:28 AM ET

He was having the best season for any of the NFL HBs when he went down last season. We all know Miami is a sad-sack of an organization but they wouldn't get rid of Brown so quickly. Not for nothing.

just one man's opinion ... and it's ESPN???

August 19, 2008  08:48 AM ET

They better keep him. His is younger and will be a good back. Ricky is a time bomb waiting to explode. Keep both and hope for the best at this point. If Ricky stays clean; they have a great backfield.

August 19, 2008  08:48 AM ET

he............

August 19, 2008  08:50 AM ET

I'd be very surprised if they get rid of him. Depth at the running back position for a struggling team should be welcomed. I'm sure this is strickly talk.

All I've heard was how well Brown was doing before he got hurt. Why trade him? It won't happen...

Yeah, when all 3 Rb's went off the board at the top of that draft, I was perplexed. You can get a perfectly good if not great RB in the later rounds and unless these guys were truly special, 1800 yards, 15 td guys, I can't see them going that high.

Turns out I was right.
