Russians want NHL deal & Radulov

Calling Alexander Radulov's jump to a Russian team an issue of the past, Continental Hockey League president Alexander Medvedev said Monday "it's time to look to the future.'' That comment and others did nothing to thaw an icy relationship between the KHL and the NHL in the wake of Radulov signing a three-year deal with Salavat Yulaev Ufa last month despite having a year left on his contract with the Predators. Medvedev is pushing for a signed transfer agreement with the NHL -- a formal set of rules governing player movement between countries -- and says it would eliminate these kinds of situations in years to come. "We need a strict enforceable scheme that will fix all the rights and the positions of the players on both sides of the ocean,'' he said. But NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said a meeting between the two sides to discuss the transfer agreement is now in jeopardy.

I would be wary of signing any deal with the Russians. Just ask the people of the Republic of Georgia how well the Russians honour agreements.

Just give them Bettman and maybe they will go away......

No offense (but I don't give a damn at this point) but Russia wants to sign pro hockey players and they bombed Georgia. Love the humanity.....

Gee...never saw this coming...

If he doesnt want to be here makr them buy out his contract, show him the door, and tell him not to come back when the new league flops.

YAY...

1) Most players looking to play in Russia are either going home, washed up or cashing in on a ridiculous offer. That really limits the possible player moves, so the NHL need not worry too much. Who has jumped? Radulov. Jagr and Emery? Enough said.

2) The NHL is just getting some medicine and doesn't like it. We have seen all kinds of Russian stars jump ship either legally or otherwise to play in the NHL, leaving Russian club teams in the cold. Now, the reverse is happening and Mr. Bettman and his Evil Henchmen don't like it one bit. Tough.

Hey Joec, were all the Russians who came over here to North America, were they under contract ? If they were, I agree with you. While I have never been there, this country is a pretty nice place to live.

August 19, 2008  09:32 AM ET

PopKing & Therrien Rocks...so what your saying is it is ok for the US to attack Iraq for Oil but not ok for Russia to attack Georgia. Seriously are you both that indoctrinated? All countries have wars, this is sports and the NHL has been stealing Russian plays for years. The NHL has become a joke.

August 19, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Russians want this! Russians want that! Russians want the other! I am sick of those whiny, sneaky, conniving jerks! I'll keep AO and Pavel D but, apart from those two, if I don't see another Russian in the NHL I'll die a happy man!

I hear that murderous KGB weasel Putin is planning on invading Canada next and "transferring" all the good Canadian players to Hades' front porch .... I mean .... Moscow!

While we're on the topic, I'd ask Georgia why they'd be so stupid as to kill 2,000 innocent civilians in Russia's backyard expect Russia to do nothing.

I see you are getting you news from Tass, that most reliable and credible Kremlin controlled propagan .... I mean news agency!

You seem to forget one small little detail: Georgia and all the other enslaved Republics were raped and brutalized for 70 years by the Russians (former Soviet Union). Can U blame any of them if they don't want to see another Ruskie any time soon?

I think since they would know who gave the midget to them we should be wary when they find out what they received. They might serve us up a nice cold plate of revenge somewhere down the road.

August 19, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Okay, since this has turned political;
1) as noted, Russia has brutalised all of those "sattelite" countries for the better part of the 20th century. Georgia trying to get a spot of revenge, while a bit late, is more than understandable.
2) Bush complaining about the Russian invasion would be laughable, if he didn't really think there was nothing wrong with the US doing it. Maybe Putin should have said he was looking for WMDs..we know how Bush feels about those!
3) Let's watch dow the road a bit. When Russia invaded Afghanistan, we armed the mujahadin, (including some guy called Bin Ladn), workiong under that great American foreign policy of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and a whole new can of worms opened, that being well armed and train (by us) radicals. What happens if we get involved here now? Shoul we watch The Georgians now?

August 19, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Hey let all the russians, swedes, finns go back to europe. We have enough great canadian and american players who are waiting to play and most likely be on par. I can hardly wait to hear Don Cherry's statement on this. Most likely telling them to go home and bring in our boys. Just remember they need the NHL more than the NHL needs them

August 19, 2008  11:12 AM ET

just think no juniors drafting russians drafting our own actually given the home grown talent a chance. Remeber who wins junior gold every year....it isn't the slimy russians or the chicken swedes.....good old canadians.....fun hockey. All the money the NHL would save on transfer payments maybe some could go to putting back a team in Quebec or Winnipeg..

The Bat
Wow. Why'll we're at it, let's just send EVERYONE back? We'll start with the Scots, (me too!) Irish and French, and leave Canada to the native inhabitants
C'mon, I thought only Americans said silly things like this....Canadians are too smart for this.
