06:48 AM ET 06.12 | Stephon Marbury said yesterday he'd like to see president/coach Isiah Thomas add another perimeter shooter in the June 28 NBA draft, in which the Knicks hold the 23rd pick. The best outside shooter Thomas has worked out so far in the pre-draft workouts is Rice shooting guard Morris Almond, who's been compared to Allan Houston.

To go with the other 26 perimeter players?

June 12, 2007  07:02 AM ET

There is a difference between perimeter players and "shooters." Perimeter players start out on the perimeter but can create there own shot by driving to the basket or shooting a jumper. A "shooter" is someone who can spot up and hit the 3. Damon Jones was a shooter in Miami. Jamal Crawford is a Perimeter player because of his ability to create his own shot. BIG DIFFERENCE. I think the Knicks do need a shooter because we damn sure dont have one right now.

rodecker76,
I see your point, but what I'm getting at is who will pass the ball to that shooter. Marbury, Crawford, Robinson and Francis don't strike me as the drive a kick type. Like you stated of Crawford, and the majority of the Knick perimeter, they create their own shot...exclusively.

June 12, 2007  09:35 AM ET

Yeah, the Knicks should make draft decisions based on the mental capacity of Marbury. Ha! Have you ever heard this guy speak? He sounds like an autistic, stoned hobo asking for loose change. Marbury- shut it!

June 12, 2007  09:40 AM ET

k11 Marbury is a player that for his career besides these last 2 was part of only 5 players in history to average 20 pg and 8apg for a career and he gets a lot of hate because of how he plays which is hard.. the second half of last season he was the total point guard again after he brought into Isiah's system of Curry first. He had quite a few drive and kicks but once everyone got hurt who was he supposed to kick it too. The knicks do need a spot up shooter. If Allan Houston never would have gotten hurt this would not even be a topic about Marbury they would have been the perfect combo cause Allan couldnt drive for his life(except the desperation Miami heave) but the short time they did have together before he got hurt it did look kinda scary all be it short lived

streams,
Those are amazing stats, but if it meant something, he'd still be in Minnesota with KG. Well, something happened there, and he ended up in Phx. Well, something happened there, and he ended up in NY...his home...Starbury. Well, something has happened there as well to where he's 'being convinced to be a point guard' by Isiah. So to see those stats truly is amazing considering you normally don't give up someone like that with those career numbers. 2 teams have traded him, and his NY career has been hit and miss....even with those numbers.

June 12, 2007  10:02 AM ET

K11 I'm just sayin he knows how to play when directed correctly.. I think everyone knows Minn didn't want to let Steph go because how he and Garnett pretty much tore up their division while they were together that was Steph choice because he hated the snow every single day. When he was in Phoenix he only got to play with Stoudemire for his rookie season and he had a good year that year also its just that Nash was a better fit.. lets face it ,it didn't matter who the old pg was Nash was going to be an upgrade. He comes to NY with Allan Houston except theres no Allan Houston but theres Allan Houstons contract(not done by Isiah) that screws us for years to come...theres Lenny Wilkins and then name another star before Isiah started to make more moves. He really hasn't had a chance in NY with Larry Brown fiasco and all.. All I'm sayin is he actually for the first time has a team to play with and the coach/Gm that put it together is on the front line with em. Lets get a shooter and as weak as the east is lets see what happens..

June 12, 2007  10:13 AM ET

You know who else has had amazing stats and gets traded Rasheed wallace (portland, atanta, detroit, ny?)Shaq from LA to Miami, Steve Nash(pho, dallas, pho)Jason Kidd(dallas, pho,NJ) so its not so abnormal

June 12, 2007  10:38 AM ET

That makes sense, a scan of the roster will reveal that the knicks have no sharp shooters. The knicks have a bunch of perimeter players and streaky shooters.

The best teams in the NBA have at least one guy the can count on to hit that outside shot, and help out with the double teams.

streams,
Good points...I'll lay off, but the second he and Crawford don't pass to this shooter (probably Morris Almond), I'm lookin' for you...lol.

June 12, 2007  10:54 AM ET

He want to go to another level, and then take that to another level then level off...

June 12, 2007  11:03 AM ET

I would love to get a 3 that could shoot. I would wait until next year to add another 2. With that said, if I could have a 3 that could give me 15 a night and play real defense, I would take it. To me scoring was not the problem last year. Stops in the last 3 minutes were.

The 15 for that 3 could be all purpose. I think we need a shooter, but I think we need defense first. It would be great to have both.

Balkman would be perfect if he had a 15 footer! If is the key word. Hopefully he's taking 200 in the morning and 200 after practice!

June 12, 2007  12:03 PM ET

We need D.

June 12, 2007  12:15 PM ET

Arron Afflalo is exactly what they need. Great shooter and hes one of the best defenders in the draft

June 12, 2007  12:18 PM ET

K11 lol yeah Im pretty much diggin a hole for myself with my optimism for this coming season but I really don't see anyone in the east scaring us and we are going to be better with this same lineup or a free agent upgrade I think we are definetely a 4 or 5 seed this year in the playoffs.
LIONTUT Balkman doesn't have a mid range shot but oddly enough he has a 3 point shot... he took quite a few this year when he was open and I think he was like 35% not bad for a slashing rookie.. hopefully he put the work in in the off season so we could have 2 David Lee's.. As far as defense I think the Knicks did an ok job I think those last 3 minutes that you speak of was more the Knicks falling apart then their actual D i mean they were down quite a few times this year by 20 or more and each time except the last week agains CHI (6 inj) they came roaring back to make it a close game that usually ended in heartbreak but it showed they are never out of a game. You need D to get those stops to get back in the game and they needed more experience playing with each other to prohibit going down by that much and if making a comeback that experience from last year will have them much more relaxed to make the right play this year.. Yeah I know I'm diggin myself deeper lol

June 12, 2007  12:40 PM ET

Too funny. I can't believe anyone even listens to "Star"....bury whatever franchise he goes to.Just what they need a perimeter player that neither he nor Crawford nor Francis will pass to.

What they need to do is find someone to take the contracts of his, Crawford & Francis's. Find some guys that will play defense and team basketball. They're all 3 street ballers and nothing more.

Stats stats stats....that's everything you'll bring up on Stephon. You don't point out the crap he throws up from 3 point range and his nonexistant defense. Just notice that every franchise he's left has gotten better when he's left. Period.

Sh$!, Mike James can have great stats on garbage teams. I'm Mike James.....B#&*#.

I just feel really bad for the Knicks. Actually I don't. Thanks for the 2 1st's for Curry. Now you can watch him come to camp fat every year....and you think it's bad in his mid 20's. Looks like you lost to the Bulls again Zeke. Peace BULLS FAN OUT!

June 12, 2007  12:49 PM ET

I will jump out there as well. I believed the Knicks were a 500 last year. They started 6 and 17, and play better every month, until the injuries. Kill Mulberry if you like, but he played good team basketball last year. I believe with the weak east, the Knicks could be a 45 ??? 48 win team. That depends on the 3 we acquire.

Also, If you watched Collins in the summer league last year, he looked lost. By December Collins showed himself to be a go defender. The last 10 games of the season Collins show he could run an offense. The last 5 games Collins showed he could score.

Mo Williams owned the knick all year. Collins frustrated him.

the knicks dont need a shooter when the whole seems to think they are one they need someone like steve nash someone who cares more about assists and knows who the best shooters are. Marbury is a good player but when does his opinion matter when he wants to get out new york asap

Every team could use a Nash or Kidd. However, there are only 2 guys for 30 teams. As good as they are, "and they are good". How many championships do they have. Right, therefore, you can win with something else.

Marbury didn't leave MN because he hated the snow, although that is one of the reasons he gave. He left out of jealousy over KG's contract. He expected to sign a deal for equal money, and was told that wasn't going to happen. So he theatened to leave as a free agent and sign with Chicago if he wasn't traded.

I think he has grown up some since then, but the sub-text to that story is that he is inclined to put personal interests ahead of winning. He's got a wicked first step, and he's a good drive and kick point guard. He gets in the passing lanes on defense. I love his game. I think his problems are primarily social, as evidenced by the instant improvement of every team he leaves.
