Hawks' Smith adding strength

Josh Smith was spotted Saturday playing in the championship game of the Wallace Prather Jr. Pro Summer League and left an indelible impression on those of us who hadn't seen him since the Hawks' playoff run ended in that Game 7 loss in Boston in early May. He's transformed his upper body into a sculpted mass of muscles. He looked as physically imposing as I've ever seen him while tussling with an array of other Atlanta-born, bred or based pros at the Adamsville Recreational Center Saturday afternoon (by the way, his team lost the big trophy because they couldn't slow down Javaris Crittenton and Louis Williams down the stretch of an extremely competitive contest). Smith's added bulk doesn't necessarily appear to be added weight either. He's literally transformed his upper body. The added strength is something he'll need this season as well, what with all the heavy lifting he and Al Horford will have to do in the paint if the Hawks are going to chase the playoffs again.

He better add up something with all that money Atlanta is paying him now. This guy made out like a bandit.

That sounds like a lot of "transforming" in two months. Hmmmmmm.

You're comparing an NBA all-star athlete, to another lesser 'pro- league player... Of course Josh Smith is going to look bigger...! Put him in a room with elementary school children, and he will have 'grown' several inches!!!!

-Waste of time...

lets give the kid credit for trying to get better..........\
too many athletes- once they get big guaranteed deals STOP trying to improve & get too comfortable.

Beware eastern confernce

Allot of theses guys forget their lower body and that imbalances your body, and is said to increase the likely hood of injuries to the lower body. I live in L.A and when the Lakers wore short shorts to comemarate the showtime Lakers Kobe looked funny as hell with his twigs for legs.

Apparently this doesn't translate into basketball. They lost because they couldn't stop Javaris Crittendton and Louis Williams. What will he do with Chris Paul or Deron Williams?

August 19, 2008  01:26 PM ET

Adding strentgth? I thought he was already strong. Doesn't he need to work more on his game like posting up and shooting a consistent jumpshot?

August 19, 2008  01:29 PM ET

ATL should make a move to get Javaris. He's from GaTech and would be a fan favorite; Somehow get rid of Salim, he's a bust.
Coming back to Josh, I hope Marvin is listening and paying attention to Josh's workouts. 'Coz he's the one that needs weight training and re-building his upper body. Sitting pretty from 10-12 ft and shooting jumpers ain't gonna cut it at that position.

Well well well news from the Hawks and smith. Finally they start to care about him again. No one else is interested i guess in major money for josh smith, so they need to get there act in gear

August 19, 2008  04:30 PM ET

why couldnt he have gone to the grizzlies :'(

August 19, 2008  06:02 PM ET

The man is a freak athlete. He COULD be the next Kevin Garnett. Maybe Josh Smith could teach Tayshaun Prince something about weights or just about his weight.

August 19, 2008  09:46 PM ET

ATL is always my dark horse team in the Eastern Conference.

August 19, 2008  10:12 PM ET

He has the hops of a madman robber on drugs jumping out a high window.
OK, I know, dumb comparison.

August 19, 2008  10:41 PM ET

I also think that he should be working on his jump shots and defense as well as his upper and lower body strength. If he is going to be playing PF in the East against Garnett, Wallace, Brand, Bosh, he can never out-muscle these guys. All these guys have better jump shots and low-post game. Plus, he got beat by Javaris & Lou? 'Freak-athletes' are great & may win prizes at the circus, but championships?

August 19, 2008  11:05 PM ET

how about instead of lifting weights and transforming his body he work on his shooting. he is a horrible 3 pt shooter and isnt that great of a jump shooter.

thank god there are no steroid test in the NBA.

August 20, 2008  03:21 AM ET

i mean tests

now if all those weight could translate in to better skills and more wins then that would be a story. most guys trying to get to the next level do weights along with working on a facet of their game.
