Knicks pick dumps Italian job

The Italian Stallion's back is still not 100 percent. Still resting an injured back he suffered during summer league in Las Vegas last month, Knicks first-round pick Danilo Gallinari has withdrawn from the Italian National Team, which kicks off today its Eurobasket Qualifier tournament vs. Serbia. A source said Gallinari made the decision on his own, though the Knicks are relieved he is not playing and are appreciative considering they know how much playing for the Italian National Team means to him. Gallinari played just one summer-league game, injuring his back in his lone contest, after getting knocked around by Cleveland's Tractor Traylor. Gallinari sat out the final four games, raising questions about his durability for his rookie season. However, Knicks brass believes Gallinari showed enough offensive versatility to make the rotation this season and believes he will get stronger by camp. His selection at No. 6 led directly to the club ridding itself of 2006 first-rounder Renaldo Balkman.

The Knicks should never have picked this kid. He's too much of a risk and if any reward it is way down the line. Sounds like another Darko to me.

Keelee

I agree. He seems like he was overhyped. And to let guys like Tractor push you around easily is not a good sign. I know the European league is also very physical and lets you get away w/ a lot of fouls, so he should have been used to the physical activities. He was picked because of the Italian tie to D'antoni. There will be a lot of pressure for both Gallinari and D'antoni.

And the trouble begins...

August 20, 2008  09:03 AM ET

D'Antoni's first mistake. Many more to follow. Back problems? Think Larry Johnson.

August 20, 2008  09:26 AM ET

The kid is 19 years old. Give him a break. He has plenty of time to get stronger. His back will be fine! Us New Yorkers always seem to jump the gun and don't have patience for anything.

DaGame2260-I'm a Knicks fan and I've been waiting long enough to have a competitive team on the court. This guy may turn out to be ok 5 yrs down the road, but there were guys available that could have helped the Knicks now. There is no way from what I have seen that this kid is a first round pick let alone a top 10.

I hope the kid makes it. My complaint is that D'Antoni used the #6 pick to get him. If he had been blowing the lid off the rim prior to going down I would be happy, but he wasn't. I think D'Antoni chose a player for his "system" not a player who had "game".

And I don't see a problem with it!!! So long the team will be successful, how does it matter? Mike is the coach and Knicks SHOULD trust his judgement on how he wants to run the show; If you don't like it, don't hire him!!!
You always have Isiah to fall back, right??

August 20, 2008  10:51 AM ET

ESPN,
The "problem with it" is that he doesn't have enough players to make his system work in New York and he doesn't have money to go get them. I don't think the team will be successful and, to me, that matters.

Ownership is trusting his judgment, for now. That's why they let him pick Gallinari.

August 20, 2008  10:57 AM ET

well hopefully he gets better

August 20, 2008  11:17 AM ET

It only makes sense he postpone National duties for now... he is only 19 and will play for Italy another century. He is smart enough to rest for an 82 game grind...

He is good... really good.. his basketball IQ is better than that of any rookie ever... I mean it... given the right system he will be unstoppable in the league... just get a taste of the fourth quarter in the only game he played... and y'll agree with what I'm talking about...

August 20, 2008  11:24 AM ET

We hired D'Antoni, and we need to give him a chance to build his team.

His goal shouldn't be winning this year; it should be putting together a team--in his system--that's competitive for a long time.

August 20, 2008  12:00 PM ET

The kid can play. Let's just hope his back heals.

August 20, 2008  01:33 PM ET

This actually sounds like "sort of with hesitation" good news for the Knicks. How long has it been? I hope he kicks some butt, one can get sick of rooting for a laughing stock to say the least.

August 20, 2008  01:48 PM ET

Give the knicks some time. Look at the salaries for the next few years, change wont happen tomorrow but with smart moves they can be good in a few years, Maybe as soon as two. It takes a long time to undo all the damage not only Isiah did, but Layden as well. Layden may be as bad or worse of a GM than Isiah was.

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/new_york.htm

Lot of contracts coming off either next year of the year after that. Stars always want to play in the NY stage, never know when one will become disgrutled and then a trade changes all your fortunes.

This season is a wash already sure, these are all Isiah's players but in time things wil change. They made a few additions which arent monumental but they are not in the postition to make monumental changes just yet. Little by little they will though before a big move is made.

August 20, 2008  01:50 PM ET

Where did this "Italian Stallion" come from? He played 1 game in the summer league, hurt his back being manhandled by Tractor Traylor, and has been sidelined ever since. Sounds to me more like a Philly than a Stallion. Maybe The Post should wait until he does something.

August 20, 2008  01:53 PM ET

Cut him some slack though guys.
He's only 19. He'll toughen up for sure.

August 20, 2008  02:48 PM ET

"This guy may turn out to be ok 5 yrs down the road, but there were guys available that could have helped the Knicks now."

That is not very smart thinking -
Lets say he is great now....SO WHAT. The team is AWFUL and has NO CHANCE of making the playoffs. We need him to DEVELOP so in 5 years when the knicks roster is purged of all their current garbage....we have someone who is entering his prime and is someone who we can either build around or be a #2 or 3 type of complementary player.

And besides- who at pick 6 is a LOCK to be better ?

Vinnie Bobarino? Nice Mr. Carter.
