Jackets' Legein quitting hockey?

Rumors began flying in Oakville, Ontario, the last couple of days that Stefan Legein, the Blue Jackets' second-round draft pick in 2007, has quit hockey. After trying numerous sources, and being met with no comments or a surprising lack of surprise, I was finally able to nail it down as true that Legein has told the Blue Jackets he won't be attending training camp. GM Scott Howson confirmed it later in the day. The burning question, of course, is what's going on with Legein? He helped lead Canada to another World Junior Championship last January, serving as alternate captain. But late last season, after he came back from the shoulder injury, Legein wasn't the same player. That's what lots of folks in Ontario told me today. He didn't get along great with his junior club teammates, the Niagara IceDogs, and he left the Syracuse Crunch after only two playoff games, saying he wanted to go back home to start working out and getting ready for 2008-09 season.

Wow.........what a shame. I wonder what happened. The guy has a lot of potential.

Thats his business. Kinda **** the Blue Jackets though.

August 20, 2008  07:45 AM ET

It sounds like his heart wasn't into it anymore from what I'm reading in the Columbus Dispatch.

I guess his shoulders are just not broad enough for the big leagues.

Has he been hanging out with Mats lately?

The good news is...I don't see any openings for this thread to become political or an opportunity to introduce Hulking females....D'OH

Some guys just aren't cut out for the rigors of pro sports. Stefan Legein is one of them. Too bad for the Jackets, though. It sucks.

What I want to know is, what the heck is T&R playing at, coming at us out of left field like this with a Blue Jackets story? Where is our Gaborik update? And our Preds thread? Hmphh.

Well its sad that he's quitting but he couldve at least told the Jackets before so they wouldnt have selected him. Oh well.

Conspiracy theory alert:

He played in Ontario which have made some people think that he's opting out of the Jackets so he can play with the Leafs this year. There are loop-holes in the CBA (example : Blake Wheeler). I guess we'll find out in about a month or so.

Too bad for the Jackets... Good luck to the guy, though.

That team just can't seem to catch a break with any of their players.

A player I know quit hockey after the start of last season and went home but I guess he decided he missed it too much and decided to come back this year for training camp.

From what I've heard it sounds like his dad was living out his NHL dreams with Legein and he just got tired of it. I also heard that he was kinda convinced to play for Team Canada in the WJC.
