Chinese team benefits Nets

There were many, including former Bucks coach Larry Krystowiak, who felt the demands and pressures on 7-0 Yi Jianlian from the Chinese National team were absurd during his rookie year in Milwaukee, which contained an inevitable head-first collision with the first-season wall. But now that Yi has experienced some Olympic success after two rancid games, many, including former Bucks teammate Bobby Simmons, feel there is a tremendous upside awaiting in New Jersey. "He's growing with experience and he's going to get a lot better," Simmons said of Yi, whom he came to the Nets with in the trade for Richard Jefferson. "Being a rookie, it was pretty tough. Plus, with him coming to the States for the first year to play basketball, that was big. And as a (first-round) pick, there's a lot of pressure. I experienced that with Kwame Brown in Washington and it's an adjustment. Yi hung in pretty well his first year."

Another overhyped player. He showed glimpses of a good game but he is not consistent even when he is playing for the Chinese team. Consistency is always the key. Maybe he will play better for the Nets because they lack some big men. I won't be surprise if the Nets will be the better team then the Bucks.

The expectations for this guy in NJ are not too high. He just needs to go out there and play hard. Score points and grab rebounds on a consistent basis and everyone will be happy.

More mid-level internationals entering the league. I wonder, is he better than a college baller that didn't get drafted?

No he is not; And what bothers me is he isn't even a hard worker on the floor; Doesn't chase down balls, jump for boards, hussle plays.
Not worth first round pick.

i aggree i saw him miss some open layups but then he had a dunk over dwight howard so as many coaches say he has flashes of potential but like you say he has no consistency

ok... what yall are forgetting... is that he's only 19 yrs old. Jermain O'Neil sucked his rookie year. Yao sucked too his first year. he might not be a SUPER STAR and probably won't be one either but give him a few years to bloom... ya'll will eat your words.

he'll be like a lamar odom at his best when he peaks out. versitile but won't be able to count on him.

Yi was a disappoint in the Olympics. What will New Jersey bring?

But those guys were not picked so high in the draft, thats the difference. Jermaine O'Neal wasnt supposed to immediatley help a team straight outta high school, those expectations were not there like there were for Yi. Yao didnt really suck his rookie year either, he is a big playing against Shaq and other great bigs in the League, but once again he was a project pick. Everyone knew it would be a couple years.

Yi compared to Kwame Brown? Both busts!

Joe Dew: Go USA | 08/20/08, 12:02 PM

my point with JO was that he was young comiing into the league to give Yi chance to develop. With Yao i meant that it took him a season to get used to USA basketball and the physicalness of the sport here.

Yi's stats aren't that bad he was a 8pt 5rb player his rookie year while avg 25mins a game. I am sure his numbers will be go up and he'll probably be close to a 14pt 8rb type of player this season or next.

If Kwame Brown was pressuring him. he doesn't have what it takes.

August 20, 2008  01:55 PM ET

Yi Jianlin may have not been very good this year, but comparing him to Kwame Brown's rookie year? Isn't that going a little too far?

August 20, 2008  02:12 PM ET

Yi is OK, he's really not a bad player, but any expectations out of this team to do anything legit are waay to farfetched

August 20, 2008  02:56 PM ET

lol.....some of you are really xenophobic.

I am absolutely NOT saying he is 'great' or even 'good'
but give the kid at least 2-3 years before you call him a 'bust' or that he 'sucks'....big men typically take more time to develop than guards. They need time to physically develop to adjust to the NBA pounding
- FYI - check out Dirks 1st year in the NBA....very similar #'s.
I AM NOT SAYING HE WILL BE LIKE or BETTER THAN DIRK
just that it takes time to develop

August 20, 2008  04:20 PM ET

The Nets aren't going to be a good team next year anyway. So, there really is no pressure on Yi to be a winner. All the guy has to do is improve his game and hopefully sell some jerseys in the Chinese market.

He brings more of a marketing side than a playing side right now anyway.

Yi is a top prospect and he's 7 feet tall, but he's not a center like Yao.
