Lewis at odds with Bengals owner?

Check out this quote from Bengals coach Marvin Lewis when asked about the possibility of Chris Henry re-joining the team. "I'm not interested," Lewis said at the team's annual preseason luncheon on July 22. "I don't think it would be productive for our football team. You have to be a productive part to be an NFL player, and there's responsibilities to being an NFL player. It's a privilege, it's not a right. There's a lot that comes with being an NFL football player." Yes, there is a lot more. Unfortunately, Lewis' employer, team owner Mike Brown, doesn't see eye to eye with the head coach about just how much more. Which is why the Henry signing might ultimately be the wedge that drives Lewis out of town after the season.

Man is this real. Just do your job boy. Now you think this holmes ain't got a record? This is the freaking NFL. Get real. They should dump this chump (THE COACH) if they do not win their first 5 games.

Bond your posts never make any sense. I agree with Lewis on this one, Henry has been given enough chances and the Bengals should have left him jobless.

August 20, 2008  07:15 AM ET

I do not envy Marvin Lewis.

August 20, 2008  07:16 AM ET

Too bad the NFL Powers-That-Think-They-Be don't have the same mentality and INTELLIGENCE as Lewis. I'm a huge Steeler fan but "Hey, Lewis. You go, guy. Well said."

August 20, 2008  07:29 AM ET

Makes you wonder how guys like Arthur Blank and this Mike Brown dude got to be so successful. Are their main businesses filled with criminal employees?

August 20, 2008  07:52 AM ET

Bond 007 again with the subtle racism using the word "boy."

But anyway, I agree with Lady. Marvin Lewis is in a bad situation...but when has the management in Cincinatti ever been a good situation?

He'll probably be let go after this year despite his coaching ability and will get another head coaching or defensive gig elsewhere. No matter how good a coach is, you won't look like a good coach if your GM and front office keep drafting and signing knuckleheads.

August 20, 2008  07:57 AM ET

This is why they are, have been and will continue to be---The BUNGLES! Henry is a cancer and has prooved it time and time again. Brown is an idiot. maybe Lewis can get a job with a real team and a real owner.

August 20, 2008  07:59 AM ET

What else would you expect from the Bungles.

August 20, 2008  08:02 AM ET

I think Lewis should get ready to leave..

August 20, 2008  08:03 AM ET

An absolut disgrace to the Bengals orginization but with Brown what's new. Remember Marvin, you do have some leverage in this. You run the practices and if you just happen to be on Henry's arse all the time, well so be it. Play the Drill Sergeant role.

August 20, 2008  08:10 AM ET

I think Marvin Lewis is about to learn that there are things that go along with being an NFL head coach and that is is a privilege to be one and not a right.....

The guy who signs the checks just made up your mind for you on the matter Marvin.....better get on board or start polishing up that resume

The man with the money makes all the rules!

August 20, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Better marvin quote about the situation is:

"We keep spending all this time on the knuckleheads instead of on the good guys; that's a problem," Lewis said. "When you spend all your time coaching knuckleheads and not spending the right amount of time with the right players in the right direction because you're putting out fires over here, putting out fires over there ... ."

August 20, 2008  08:45 AM ET

"Brown is an idiot."

"An absolut disgrace to the Bengals orginization but with Brown what's new."

"Bengals should bring Matt Millen on board just to make the failure and embarassment complete..."

Got to agree on all accounts here.

pw,
great post, even better avatar!

Marvin Lewis probably can't wait to get out of there. How many owners or GMs would knowingly sign a player when the coach had made it very clear he didn't want him around?
