Manning won't guarantee Week 1 start

Quarterback Peyton Manning was in the building Tuesday morning as the Indianapolis Colts went through a get-to-know-you practice session at Lucas Oil Stadium. The question that remains unanswered, though, is: Will the NFL's two-time MVP be on the field when the Colts open the regular season Sept. 7 against the Chicago Bears? Colts owner Jim Irsay conceded "it'll be close on Peyton. Only he will know if he's ready. I think there's a good chance he will be. "We know there's more rehab ahead, but he is on schedule. The anticipation is he'll be ready, but it'll be close." Manning's availability and ability to extend his streak of 160 consecutive regular-season starts have been in doubt since he underwent surgery July 14 to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee. His rehabilitation forced him to miss all of training camp in Terre Haute and likely will keep him off the practice field at least until next week. As for being ready for the Colts' nationally-televised opener against the Bears, Manning offered optimism, not a guarantee.

No, see Peyton you don't get it! You're supposed to start because I have you as my fantasy starter, so I will expect you on the field, in uniform for game one! Are we clear?

August 20, 2008  07:12 AM ET

I think Peyton will be on the field Sept. 7 even if it's to take only one snap.

August 20, 2008  07:19 AM ET

It's a long season. Don't do something stupid and end up sitting for the season.

August 20, 2008  07:56 AM ET

I agree with Lady again (what is going on today!?). He'll probably be out there for a series, maybe a few snaps before coming out and resting up. They open up against the Bears, it's not like Kyle Orton is going to beat the Indy defense. The only way the Colts lose that game is if the Colts DEFENSE beats themselves.

he'll be fine. they'll be fine.

August 20, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Don't come back too early just for the sake of starting the season. 16 games and playoffs is a long long time....do the right thing Peyton...wait until you are 100%

August 20, 2008  10:55 AM ET

OHHHHH Poor super wonder boy Manning might not start on opening day. What a freakin tragedy

August 20, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Please don't start. We need all the help we can get right now!

Go Bears!

August 20, 2008  11:06 AM ET

Mr. EGO Manning will play, and this s why:

He is the only player close to the Favre "No Games Missed" record.

Plus in his own words - I will be the first QB on the field in our new house.

^^^Agree he's a tough SOB.

Anyone thinking that Peyton won't be on the field against the Bears is foolish. The dude is a gamer and wants nothing more than to see his team win. I don't care if he's in it only for stats or fame...he's going to play.

Yeah, he is definitley going to play week 1 against the bears.

August 20, 2008  05:25 PM ET

Better to consult with the "Oracles" before making such a decision !!!

August 20, 2008  06:26 PM ET

everyones gonna debate it now considering its the super bowl rematch its gonna be a huge friggin deal to the colts and to the bears alike....

i HOPE peyton manning comes back in week 1 because i want our defense to tear him to friggin shreds....cause if he DOESNT come back and we trash them anyways...its because jim sorgi isnt a capable enough QB (which i dont think he is) and i wont stand for the "bears got lucky" chant when we tear them a new ****

August 20, 2008  06:47 PM ET

If he doesn't play in Week 1 of the regular season, I will have my left bursa sac removed. He may not guarantee that he will start, but I will.

Meteora-Who is your starting QB? And running back? Who are your tackles?

Even if Manning isn't at 100%, the Colts defense will dominate the Bears offense. It could very easily be a shutout if we don't kick it to Hester. The Colts are the superior team at almost every position besides linebacker (which is getting closer). The Colts should beat them easily if Peyton plays and beat them by around 9 if he isn't 100%. As long as we don't overlook them because J-Ville is coming up, we will win this one easily. The Bears couldn't stop Addai and Rhodes in the Super Bowl. They won't be able to stop this team running.

These 2008 Colts are the most talented Colts team in the history of the franchise. If we can win our first 8 games, we will get the number one seed for sure. I don't care about 16-0. I'd rather have it not be a possibility. Too much pressure and it would be annoying that it would be a back story on ESPN when the Patriots were forcibly shoved down our throats last year.

Meteora-Sorgi sucks. Horribly. You've watched Grossman a few too many times if you think Sorgi is capable of anything QB-related. Hopefully he will be cut and Gray will be the backup.

I'm predicting the Colts win this one by 17 but are up by 31 when the 4th quarter starts. We will then send in the scrubs. The Colts are better on NBC. They love the spotlight.

August 20, 2008  08:17 PM ET

People act like the Bears have a shittee defense, the defense is healthy and has led the league is defensive points and turnovers when healthy like two or three years.

August 22, 2008  09:00 AM ET

The Bears do have one of the better defenses in the league, but our defense is a lot better than given credit for. Peyton will play and the Colts will beat Da Bears easily. Bears fans talk **** about Manning because he trashes them every time that he has played them. Even if it is Sorgi, Addai and Rhodes will run all over them. Also Orton(what a joke for a starter) and Co. won't put up enough points to win many games at all this year, let alone enough to beat one of the best offenses to ever set foot on the field
