Yost denies overworking Sabathia

After manager Ned Yost allowed CC Sabathia to throw 130 pitches Monday night against Houston for his fifth complete game in nine starts since coming from Cleveland, there was speculation among some national media that the Milwaukee Brewers are going to "use up" Sabathia to try to get to the playoffs because they have little chance of keeping him as an upcoming free agent. On Tuesday, Yost called such speculation nonsense. "Everybody gets in an uproar about 130 pitches," Yost said. "But you have to understand the anatomy of what"s going on in the game. He"s averaging 13.7 pitches per inning, which is the seventh-lowest in baseball. "Where guys get in trouble is with 20-, 25- and 30-pitch innings. CC has none of those." Sabathia was at 111 pitches against Houston through eight innings when Yost sent him back to the mound with a 9-2 lead. Had shortstop J.J. Hardy not fumbled what could have been a game-ending double play grounder, Sabathia would have escaped with 120 or so pitches. "Never once did he labor," Yost said.

Doesn't matter. This slob will get shelled in the playoffs against the good AL teams. He will then get his huge FA contract anyway and show up for spring training weighing about 400lbs.

August 20, 2008  07:25 AM ET

That's assuming the Brewers make the playoffs and then the WS.

August 20, 2008  07:40 AM ET

The point is not whether he was laboring or not after 111 pitches. It is about POSSIBLY overworking your ace when it's not necessary. Is the bullpen that bad that they can't hold a 7 run lead for one inning?

August 20, 2008  07:42 AM ET

Hell, even Bob Howry has a decent chance of giving up less than 7 runs in an inning.

August 20, 2008  07:58 AM ET

I would tend to agree with the national media outlets and Bill Wrigley on this one. While Yost has a point about the ease that CC is tearing through the NL, what he's definately not looking after Sabathia as if he was there long term ace.

I'd also like to add that I think Racer X is a dumass.

August 20, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Yeah Ned Yost, be real easy on CC this year because the Yankees need him next year.....

August 20, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Any possibility that CC is pressing Yost to get all those complete games for contract negotiating?

August 20, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Everyone complains that starters don't go far enough anymore and now he does and everyone still complains. Hypocrities. If CC isn't complaining, then shut up about it.

August 20, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Thanks Ok. Burn him out. The Brewers won't have him next year anyway.

August 20, 2008  09:02 AM ET

You're over-cookin' my grits, Yost.

I second that motion

August 20, 2008  10:01 AM ET

You're damn right he's riding this guy into the ground! Why not...Sabathia will turn around next year and hold some team hostage for close to $200M.

August 20, 2008  10:09 AM ET

sheets and cc should agree to go back to the brewers for less money each. if they do that team would be a contender for the next decade

August 20, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Who cares? He is a pitcher and he is doing what he gets paid to do. I see no ill effects of letting him pitch 5 complete games ocer his last 9 starts. More managers should be doing what Yost is doing. All I see is pitchers being babied and yet it seems more of them are on the DL now than they were back when pitchers routinely threw 130 pitches a game. And since when did 6 innings and 3 earned runs or less (quality start) become something to celebrate?

August 20, 2008  10:35 AM ET

The guy is 6-7 and weighs 290. Give me a break. He gets paid to pitch and he's not complaining, so let him pitch.

AFScott... good point. If you're gonna get someone you know is a rental and will inevitably sign for big bucks with another team, why not get the most out of him?

CC is doing well under the conditions he has been playing under. Example today( he didnt pitch) but the team lost even though they had the lead. Well so much for the Prince of Power :/........... But next year he be back in the American league wearing Pinstripes NYY ones that is.......

Again calling me names solves issues? Where are you going doing in your life? Some how you need to deal withh REAL people. Do you swear call them names at them as well? Wonders how how many friends they have in real life :/
