No wiggle room in Crean contract

The signed contract of Indiana University men's basketball coach Tom Crean, released by the school Tuesday, includes far more strict language on rules compliance, disciplinary action and personal behavior than that of his predecessor, Kelvin Sampson. "There was some wiggle room for Sampson," said Rick Karcher, a sports law expert at Florida Coastal School of Law, who keeps a database of college coaches' contracts. "In Crean's contract, there is no wiggle room." Crean's contract, worth at least $23.6 million over 10 years, comes after he had been working under a "memorandum of understanding" since being hired in April. That agreement outlined the terms of his employment until a detailed contract could be negotiated. The Indianapolis Star reported last month that IU agreed to increase the length of Crean's deal from eight to 10 years.
