QB decommits from Michigan

One of Michigan's two verbal commitments at the quarterback position in the class of 2009 has decided to re-open his recruitment and is no longer pledged to the Wolverines. The father of Chesapeake, Va., four-star quarterback Kevin Newsome confirmed Tuesday afternoon with rivals.com that the family has informed Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez that Newsome will start looking at other schools. Newsome's father said Michigan will still be considered as his son moves forward with his recruitment. One factor expected to be important, however, is the proximity of a school to his Hampton Roads-area home. Virginia Tech should be atop the list of new contenders for his services ,and Newsome's former high school coach already has publicly lobbied for him to play his college football in-state.

Ouch. Not good for the guy in the wizard hat.

August 20, 2008  07:31 AM ET

Well people have been saying atleast that Michigan will have a capable dual threat guy next season, well kiss that comforte good bye.

Huge blow to Michigan considering all the talk that has surrounded this kid. Not definite but the in-state suitors will be hard to fight off.

August 20, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Either way, Michigan will be in a much better QB situation next year than this one. Michigan already has a good QB commitment locked up, with another one possibly on the way, with this decommitment, it ups the chances Tate will come around.

Is it a blow, yes, but at the end of the day, kid is just another question mark. A program like michigan wont be without a qb long.

This stings...but this was something that has been subject of rumors for a few months now. It's been suggested that negative recruiting along the lines of "Michigan will not prepare you for the NFL like before, especially under RR and his spread" is what made him re-open his recruitment. As much as I think Newsome is a great athlete, I didn't understand why he was such a highly rated dual threat QB. I have always liked the next guy Tate Forcier and learned to really like his bud Shavod Beaver. I don't think Newsome will be coming to Michigan.

Rich Rod felt very betrayed. Karma is a bizitch.

Agree, except this year.

August 20, 2008  09:18 AM ET

For people who say it is a huge blow obviously don't follow Michigan football that much. They already have a 09 qb recruit in Shavodrick Beaver, plus now they have a greater chance to get either dual threat qb Tate Forcier or Eugene Smith, both 4 stars.

August 20, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Way too early to say Huge Blow. This happens all the time. I am quite sure RichRod will make recruiting this position a priority.

August 20, 2008  09:22 AM ET

I still say if you commit you should be locked barring any huge changes....

Proximity to Virgnia? In State? Tech and UV are the top two contenders, with Florida likely a close third as an out of state choice.

Michigan will be OK eventually. I think the big loss was those 4 linemen. But Rodriguez will get lean and mean linemen who want to play his style of ball and Michigan will be awfully dangerous with their recruting power and that offense. They have always recruited superb Defensemen. They might be very, very good in a couple years.

Look at Meyer, everyone poo-pooed him in the SEC. Now that everyone's copying his offense, can we say he was not entirely errant?

August 20, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Losing those 4 linemen this season hurt worse. I think he will start getting his kind of guys though and he pushes guys like Meyer and Carrol and Saban do. He's going to win a lot of games there, but this year . . .

Well Utah has a decent D (especially on the line), not like Michigan's, but fair. If Michigan whips them, they might have it together.

August 20, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Sounds like Daddy and the High School coach have this kid by the balls!

August 20, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Everyone is copying Meyer? I don't think so buddy.

OMG, Get over it!!!!!!!!!

I think the spread option was around before Meyer used it

August 20, 2008  11:08 AM ET

As far as I know, this kid doesn't have an arrest record, any fighting dogs, an STD or an interest in 15 year old girls. So I doubt VA Tech is interested.

^^^ NICE ^^^

^^ agreed ^^

This is not news, it was rumored his family wanted him to stay closer to home anyway. No surprise, was waiting for this announcement a while now, got it, time to move on to other recruits. There seems to be no shortage at this time, An other QB prospect will emerge, RR's offensive scheme is to wide open for most dual threats not to consider.
