Is Alex Smith a Niners' bust?

Alex Smith has been a starting quarterback most of his athletic career. He's not prepared to contemplate life in a backup role for the first time since early in his rookie season in 2005, when Smith bided time as Tim Rattay's understudy. Few seem to understand what the 49ers have in mind with this ongoing reluctance to name a starting quarterback. All Smith knows is that for the third straight exhibition game, he will be the No. 2 guy behind J.T. O'Sullivan, when the 49ers play the Bears at Solider Field on Thursday night. The 49ers exercised a $12 million buyback clause in Smith's contract in March, extending the 2005 No. 1 overall pick's deal through the 2010 season. That's guaranteed money the franchise can't get back. For what likely will be a second-string player. O'Sullivan, who is with his seventh NFL franchise since entering the league in 2002, signed for the veteran minimum of $645,000 and a $40,000 bonus.

Looks like San Fran got one heck of a bargain-basement deal when they signed O'Sullivan. He's looking good so far.

Hummm...maybe their scouting dept needs over hauling...Alex Smith #1 overall...I think not...they could have traded down and still got him or Aaron Rodgers in the same draft.

YES, Next Question!

August 20, 2008  08:06 AM ET

I believe he was a waste of money..No way I would have pick him at #1...

I'm finding your avatar of today to be even more disturbing than yesterday's. My eyes keep trying to put that woman's face in focus, can't, and I'm getting a headache. What happened to her picture? =-}

a smith probably wont be a starter in the nfl much longer. someone will be happy to have him for a backup though.

Freaky huh? She has two sets of eyes - its an illusion. Wild. Do not view if drunk, will cause intermittent vomiting.

My pleasure. Listen, I'm hopping around trying to find my **** princess. I'm told her kiss will turn me into a handsome prince. How about a little smooch?

August 20, 2008  09:27 AM ET

that's "kracker" princess. Don't ask. But howabout that smoocharoonie, toots?

August 20, 2008  09:37 AM ET

They should have drafted the surefire talent in Braylon Edwards. Sure they needed a QB, but the QB crop was so bad that year it just didn't make any sense. You take the best player available. They wanted Leinart all along, and in reality could have got him too if they had waited.

If I had a quarter for every time I heard that line I'd have enough money to buy a football team but, since I think I know who you really are and have you on my friends list, sure, why not. No tongues though or the deal is off. :}
P.S. As for the kracker remark??.......I'm a Ritz, baby, a Ritz. =]

August 20, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Well, when you are the #1 overall pick of the NFL Draft and a couple years later you are battling against one guy that went and undrafted, and another guy who was picked in the 6th rd...on his 8th NFL team....yeah we can call you a bust.

Looks like both Vernon Davis & Alex Smith are both busts. Martz never utilitzes the TE in his schemes so he's basically going to waste away. Davis may get a second chance with another team because he has talent.
