Heerenveen seeking paydirt for Bradley

Despite having only one year remaining on his contract, Michael Bradley has Heerenveen negotiating tough for three reasons: 1) He is a 21-year-old U.S. international starter that scored 19 goals across all competitions last season; 2) Heerenveen doesn't believe it has an equal or better player ready to step into his spot immediately; and most importantly, 3) the team can easily recoup any potential "non-sale loss" by having the American help it advance in this year's UEFA Cup and KNVB Cup, as well as enjoying his contribution as they chase another lucrative European berth for next season. Put simply, they don't have to sell Bradley -- so why would they accept a low-ball offer?

This is what I feared would happen with Bradley...Stuck in the benelux just like Gooch...Was really hoping the Everton or Boro offers were true but apparently they got cold feet. Another season at Heerenveen won't kill his career but Heerenveen might be losing a chance to cash in...I seriously doubt that he'll replicate his 19 goal total from last season.

why not? Man, some US fans, like to bring down our players. He might replicate his 19 goals or more. One more season will not hurt the kid, he should get bigger money.

MB may not get his 19 goals, but there is no doubt that he'll end up scoring quite a few.... 19 goals as a box to box midfielder is pretty solid.... if Heerenveen doesnt sell him, the only one hurting will be Heerenveen... MB can only improve his status by having another solid season....

next year he'll be a free agent (assuming they dont trade him in Jan barring a solid 1st half the season), and will be pursued more by teams.....

Isn't it awesome to see such a story about an American player overseas?

August 20, 2008  02:16 PM ET

Come on, there are worse places to develop a player than Herenveen, which had quite a few U23 players in the Olympics. We are talking about the Eriedivisie, which has some really top notch competition there. Its not like he is playing for some relegation stricken EPL team which has to ruin players. I wouldn't even entertain England because the growth there is stagnant. Play in a European League.

August 20, 2008  03:12 PM ET

Don't make this sound like the Dutch league is not known for developing talent. If he doesn't sign an extension, he'll probably move to a big club in the winter transfer. Remeber, he's still young. Holland is a great place to develop, especially on offense

This isn't a bad thing. He gets more time to develop.

I read a rumor about Celtic being interested in him. That would make sense. The Bhoys have been running a 4-2-1-3 when Barry Robson is in, and Bradley would be perfect as the other defensive midfielder (opposite Donati).

Spam x4, Timing, Location, and Money. The "sucks" part comes into play too!

Lucic sucks.

August 21, 2008  01:07 PM ET

Ditto, Lucic does in fact blow phat wuns

August 22, 2008  12:33 PM ET

I agree with Lucic. I just don't see it with Bradley. He only starts on the nat'l team because his dad is the coach. In fact I think he even holds us back, clearly outclassed by the oppsoing midfielders, too many giveaways!

August 22, 2008  01:04 PM ET

And have any of the Mikey detractors seen him play for Heerenveen (as in for a coach with a clue)?

August 22, 2008  02:06 PM ET

Actually no I haven't, unfortunatley FSC seems to think the EPL is the only league we have interest in. Good point, but doesn't address the issue of all the midfield giveways during intl games.

August 22, 2008  02:07 PM ET

And he is only 21, my beef isn't so much with him. I think its a huge conflict of inteserst to have his dad starting his 21 y/o son, over stronger, more experienced players.
