St. John's coach Norm Roberts has struggled to land top city recruits since he was hired in 2004. But he may have begun to reverse the trend Wednesday when Bronx guard Omari Lawrence verbally committed to the Red Storm. Lawrence, a 6-4, 205-pound senior at South Kent (Conn.), averaged 18.2 points for St. Raymond in the Bronx last season and was named to the Daily News' All-City first team. Lawrence had been recruited by UConn, Memphis, Clemson, Virginia, Marquette, Louisville, Arizona and Xavier, among others.

Even though he didn't go to Marquette, it is still good to see players going to their state school(s). Hope the trend continues.

What's the over under, does he stay one year or two years before going pro?

How can they fix the college b-ball problem?

This year's NBA draft made it clear that many of the best players are just playing one year while they wait to turn 19.

"and was named to the Daily News' All-City first team". Enough said, huh?

August 21, 2008  06:18 PM ET

Miyagi, NYC is one of the top b-ball cities in the country, being named all-city is good; you know how many schools are in NYC?

August 21, 2008  07:13 PM ET

Amen Crean N' Crimson. Amen. If you are All-City first team here you are GOOD.

August 22, 2008  12:37 AM ET

I meant it as a compliment.

Being a St Johns fan AND a Jets fan has unfortunatley taught me one very important life lesson.......
NEVER BE OPTOMISTIC....it'll only come back to bite me on the ****

That being said.....it is encouraging that we start landing recruits a half a decade into Norms run

I know how you feel jgb. I too pull that daily double. It's even worse for me. I hold a degree from St. John's. All I felt was pain.

I'm glad for St. John's. I think it is important for the Big East to have St. John's fielding strong teams. They were once one of the premier programs in the country--hopefully they can turn it around.

One good recruit, though, isn't going to cut it--not in this day and age.
