Cuban puts grudge aside for coach

06:06 AM ET 08.21 | You can debate whether the return of Devean George makes the Mavericks better. There's no question, however, that Mark Cuban's willingness to put his grudge with George's agent aside to get the deal done is a good sign. Cuban made no secret of his displeasure with Mark Bartelstein after George blocked the original Jason Kidd trade based on his advice. That's why George coming back to Dallas is a surprise. However, Rick Carlisle wanted George. And Cuban is more concerned with putting his new coach in position to succeed than carrying out a grudge against an agent. "I don't hold grudges, too often," Cuban wrote in an e-mail. "New coach, new environment. The team comes first." Bartelstein said he and Cuban needed a "period of time to clear the air" before working on getting this deal done.

WOW, a owner who actually listens to his coach. That's something new. Now, can he get the Cub's deal done?

August 21, 2008  06:45 AM ET

Cuban shows good form with this approach.
Hopefully, Bartelstein and Cuban don't get into another conflict. Bartelstein is probably wary of it and likely would not do anything drastic when dealing with Cuban in the future.

It was only business. He would have been a horrible agent if he had let that deal go through. The player's loyalty is supposed to lie with the team but the agent's loyalty will always be with the player!

Cuban is probably not mad now because the JKidd experiment did not have a good outcome. Just like the JKidd deal, Cuban just followed the advise of the head coach. Avery wanted a veteran point guard who does not need coaching but yet Avery went against what he wanted. Avery continued to control the PG that's why Avery is out.

Huh?
George is an aging back-up small forward
how exactly does he make the Mavs better?

August 21, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Cuban's usually a d*ck, but props for this one

August 21, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Wow! A billion dollars and no sense. News Flash: The fact that you think Devean George will make your team better, is an indication that you've missed the bus--like bringing in DeSagna Diop to back up what should be your back-up center. You know, the one you're paying $60 million.

He might be, but I believe he has more heart than some of the starters on that team. I think Cuban will come to the conclusion, very soon, that the old Mavs cannot win it all anymore. It's time to rebuild AGAIN around D. Nowitzki and J. Terry.

The rebuilding project might prove to be too much work now, especially after the Kidd deal and the financial commitments they have signed. Cuban, get to work!

August 21, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Like him or hate him Cuban wears it all on his arm for the world to see. He's a WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) kind of owner. That means, regardless of what he's done for the team and the coach, he really, really doesn't like Bartelstein.

Cheesy Texan, I agree with you 100%, Bartelstein was just doing his job.

August 21, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Mark Cuban should not be allowed to make roster decisions. He has made quite a few bad moves over the years.

August 21, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Devean George is a good player, but with the talent that was getting added to New Jersey, I would've left and went to play with Harris and those guys. Dirk is soft, the Mavs won't make the playoffs this year.

August 21, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Horrible move. The past year, the Mavs have not made any sense. Kidd is on the decline, they overpaid for Diop, now they're signing a terrible shooter who kills the team. Mavs team analysis at www.nbagauntlet.com coming soon.

August 21, 2008  10:37 AM ET

I used to really enjoy Cuban but I feel like he constantly has problems w/ someone. DG did the right thing...would'nt Cuban have done the same?

August 21, 2008  11:10 AM ET

All right!!! Signing George along with bringing back Diop and the point guard who's taken 3 shots in the entire olympics. This is what is supposed to get Mavs fans excited? Now if they can re-sign Van Horne and extend Stackhouse, this team should be back to the glory days of old. Real old.

well cant you trade diop and the other back up center for a good one

I think Dirk has a lot of heart.......
he's just not the tough inside player that he needs to be to get his team over he top.
