Three-QB system at Oregon?

It took the brilliance of Dennis Dixon last season to put an end to the three words -- two-quarterback system -- that haunt many Oregon fans. So, are you ready for . . . a three-quarterback system? "We've been doing it for so long, pretty much since '05," said center Max Unger when asked if three cadences might pose a problem. Nate Costa had pretty much made this a one-quarterback team until last week's scrimmage, when Justin Roper outplayed him. Meanwhile, freshman Chris Harper continues to develop into an offensive force, even if he still has trouble throwing the ball. "We probably would hope that one would get it done," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. "If there's other things that a second or third quarterback brings to the table, giving us another way to attack somebody or create another preparation headache for opposing defenses, certainly we'll consider that."

And so it begins...CHAOS. How many teams does this make this year with multiple QB problems. It's getting to the point where teams will stick just about anybody back there to take the snap.

Just say it, Mike ... "I don't really have a QB" ... there, don't you feel better now?

August 21, 2008  07:37 AM ET

Well, I guess it won't be long before Oregon goes tumbling out of the top 25.

Wow, Oregon is getting ripped pretty badly here, but I would like to be the voice of reason and just point out that there is a huge difference between playing in the spring game and in a live game, and he more than likly wants to see who can perform better in games, and as you know, you need to play all three QB's in games to see which one plays better. LSU did this with Matt Flynn, Jamarcus Russel, and Marcus Randal in 2004 all season long, and they ended up having a 9 win season, it can be done.

If having two qb's mean you don't have any, what does having three qb's mean?

August 21, 2008  09:19 AM ET

One will step up. Play them all.

August 21, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Why don't coaches grow balls and actually name ONE starting QB....that's what this boils down to is coaches not having any balls anymore!

August 21, 2008  09:49 AM ET

^^ because the other two will get their panties in a bunch and transfer to georgia southern or jackson st....

I think QB problems in NCAA are due to nothing other than piss-poor coaching. If you can't take an athlete and coach him and work him out to be the starter, then you're just not coaching good enough and need to take yourself to the house.

Agree with xxx84xxx there. That's the problem with naming a starter. Transfers. Kids don't want to be backups or deal with competition anymore.

As long as Jerimiah Johnson is starting, they'll be alright.

August 21, 2008  11:58 AM ET

Jeremiah...Excuse me.

The Oregonian is notorious for less than stellar reporting. The scrimmage in question had Nate Costa w/ the second string o-line and third string receivers going up against the starting Defense and secondary, when young receivers drop passes and the defense is intimately familiar with your offensive playbook, it's hard not to look a little unprepared. Costa, baring injury will be just fine. With Oregons strong backfield, improvements at wide receiver( J.Will has new glasses!) and a top notch tight-end, the Ducks offensive production wont suffer much. If Costa should go down, the Duck's have options on their bench. This story is just a rag newspaper trying to invent drama where none exists.

Less than zero?

See what the Chicago Bears started?

August 21, 2008  01:07 PM ET

Soon they will have as many Qb's as uniforms

August 21, 2008  01:18 PM ET

Running the spread, having three or more capable QBs is more of a blessing than a curse.

August 21, 2008  01:33 PM ET

costa will start, roper will be a good backup and harper will be brought in occassionally as a change-of-pace. i think the defense and the running game will carry us early until the offense finds its groove. we'll be just fine.
quack!

I like xxx84xxx's prediction better. Costa starts, Roper gets his panties in a bunch and transfers to Georgia Southern and Harper gets his panties in a bunch and transfers to Jackson St.

John Madden said, "If you have more than one QB, you don't have a QB"!
