Injured LF Carl Crawford showed up at Tropicana Field on Wednesday for the first time since undergoing surgery last week on his right middle knuckle. While no firm timetable has been established for a return to the lineup - Tampa Bay executive vice president Andrew Friedman said early indications are the final series of the year might be a best-case scenario - Crawford said he isn't viewing the setback as season-ending.

Tampa Bay Rays are a great story this year. You hate to see this. It would be nice to have the team 100% (like all the other teams) going into the post season. It sucks every year to watch a great team fall apart due to injuries just when it gets down to the end of the grind. Bummer.

Sure thanks Carl... Now you tell me... So I could have kept you on the DL rather than cutting you completely from my fantasy baseball team?!

His right middle Knuckle? Damn he needs that while he's looking back at Boston!

Ha! But he won't for the Yankees, they'll be too far behind to see anything! HA!

Yankees will need a very good pair of glasses to see that little digit.

It's been a tough 24 hours. But I'll live.

August 21, 2008  10:20 AM ET

It's a shame he got hurt during this great season for the Rays

August 21, 2008  11:09 AM ET

It's great to see the Rays fill the void and have role players step up. They've managed to still win consistently.

No one's going to catch them in the AL East, so it's better to have a rested Crawford and Longoria for the stretch run and the playoffs.

August 21, 2008  11:40 AM ET

The Rays appear to be a team on a mission, I think they'll overcome his absence form the lineup for a month.

August 21, 2008  01:27 PM ET

I hope he can make it back...Tampa needs him.

August 21, 2008  04:39 PM ET

they haven't missed a beat with all the injuries...they are holding their own with the class of the AL the angels...that being said, if the rays must beat my beloved yankees, I hope they get to the playoffs healthy and fully intact.

August 21, 2008  10:25 PM ET

If the Rays make the playoffs, Crawford wants in on that. I don't blame him.

August 21, 2008  11:25 PM ET

Too bad for Carl - the one real pro during all their bad years and he can't be part of the run to the pennant !!!

August 22, 2008  12:53 PM ET

Carl has been the constant in Tampa for several years. During the dismal years when everyone ran away from the Rays, he performed every day like a true champion. Not feigning phantom injury or copping an attitude. When the playoffs roll around he will be there. I don't think a pack of mules would be able to drag him off the field when we get there.

DEVO (SPECTRE) UMMM --- who says the team is falling apart???? Their record after Crawford and Longoria were injured is 9 and 3!! All the naysayers need to understand that this team's success is not based on one, two, or even three key players. Every single member of the roster contributes and helps pick up the slack when another is injured.
Carl is one of the many keys to this team's success. His ability to return will be a huge accomplishment. But the Rays continue to shine without him, as well as without Longoria and Percival.
