Merriman to see knee specialist

Shawne Merriman will return from Birmingham, Ala., today after consulting with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews about lingering pain in his left knee. Further surgery is an option for the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker, but it is also possible Merriman will be able to begin the season. Merriman, who has been working rigorously on the side throughout training camp, made the decision along with his advisers to see Andrews on Tuesday and flew to Alabama. He was examined by Andrews yesterday, but a source said a diagnosis and course of action will not be known for a while.

I know a girl that just went on a date with Merriman last month. She said he was a nice guy, but she didn't even know who he was. She also met "some guy who's name started with an L that played running back with him."

I just laughed.

So I wonder why many of these high priced guys wait until the season begins to go see the doc about their injuries? There is no-way a true athlete is unaware of a knee problem for 6 months! If I were paying someone in the neighborhood of 5 - 10 - 15 million per year I'd require physicals at the end of the season as well as at the beginning. Then they could get thing's worked on during the off season and still have a chance to earn their paycheck. If a player reports to camp with a season ending injury "no-play-no-pay"!
