Rookie might start at PG for Heat

Listening to Dwyane Wade speak earlier today from Beijing about the Heat, one gets the sense that some in the organization have told him that Mario Chalmers just might emerge as an opening-night starter. Wade's words: "I really believe in our point guard, Mario Chalmers. I think he can be great for us and surprise a lot of people." Center, though, is another issue to Wade. "We haven't found a five-man," he said.

Not a bad choice. Heat just need somebody to keep the team steady and the PG to make open shots. Chalmers may do that. He could be like BJ Armstrong of the Bulls.

I suggested this right on the draft day, and still think Chalmers is THE steal of this year's draft. Sure he'll have his struggles, but he is a bonafide starting PG in this league

August 21, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Given the chance Chalmers should be a very solid pg in the league...

August 21, 2008  09:22 AM ET

I think he will be better then BJ Armstrong. Armstrong wasnt near as athletic, as great of a defender, or as gifted as an all around shooter as Chalmers.

The Celtics and a few other teams will regret not taking Chalmers in the 1st rd.

How does this make sense? The Celtics draft an often troubled player from New Mexico in JR Giddens. A guy that had to transfer from KU because of legal problems. They pick him and pass up the Final Four MVP, a guy that led his team to the National Title, the same place where Giddens had to transfer from.

That is an example of why fans dont understand the NBA.

The Heat aren't going anywhere anyway. They may as well begin grooming Chalmers if they believe he is their future. I said months ago that the Heat needed to address the center. Instead Riley has spent 2 years almost trying to find a point guard. FOR WHAT?

he will have a better rookie year then derrick rose

he will handle the ball more then derrick rose because the heat dont have a hiriach type PG but chalmbers has wade marion and beasley to assist to

August 21, 2008  09:46 AM ET

chalmers will do well because he also doesnt have much pressure playing for a lottery team that doesnt have high expectations.

August 21, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Chalmers is a player. I don't think Derrick Rose will live up to the hype (at least not in his rookie year).

August 21, 2008  09:57 AM ET

They should start him.

August 21, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Chalmers is probably going to be really nasty in the NBA. He's a gamer.

Dude; go back to wherever you've been that last couple of weeks. I didn't think it was possible for your comments to become any more ridiculous, but you've outdone yourself.

August 21, 2008  10:23 AM ET

we already know that he will take the BIG shot (and make it)..he has ice water in his veins..i like the kid..we'll see

Happy to see the wolves traded him for nothing and extended Sebastian Telfair... Having Kevin McHale run your local hoops franchise is a really, really good time....

August 21, 2008  11:46 AM ET

They have no other choice.

They should be fine with Chalmers. They have a good 1-2 punch in D.Wade and Marion so they should be ok with Chalmers.
