Yost defends slumping Sheets

Brewers manager Ned Yost says it is understandable that right-hander Ben Sheets has been somewhat frustrated with his results in recent weeks but does not believe the veteran right-hander is pressing to keep up with new ace CC Sabathia. Sheets is 1-5 over his last eight starts. His earned run average over that span is 4.06, certainly not horrible but leaving just enough margin to get beat. Sheets defended himself after a 5-2 loss Tuesday night to Houston, saying, "I don't think I'm pitching as bad as it's made out to be." Yost agreed with that assessment. "He's not really pitching that bad," Yost said. "I'm sure (he's getting frustrated) a little bit. It gets to the point where you have good first halves and the second halves are always a struggle. I'm sure there's frustration."

Come on Sheets- if you're really lookin to get over paid for your frequently DL-dass then you're gonna have to turn it on sometime.

Sheets is definitely in a slump right now. I don't even know what to do about it.

August 21, 2008  08:59 AM ET

very possible that Sheets is chasing CC in the big contract race...

Hi Becky, a pink NY nice touch. Girls just want to have fun. Or so they tell me.

August 21, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Maybe they just need Prince to slap him around in the dugout after his next bad start.

August 21, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Ben just needs to be patient and not let CC's success push him too hard. Pitching frustrated only leads to more struggles and Ben is too good to let that get to him. Ben hasn't been pitching bad and this article is really out of place. Lack of offense also leads to loses. Ask CC about his record before he came to Crew. Ben rocks. GO CREW!

August 21, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Lack of offense doesn't jack up a pitchers ERA. Now if you want to blame shoddy defense and fielders (or Fielders) with no range for the ERA, we can talk.

Talk about a scary motivational tactic......... but it worked for Parra, right?

August 21, 2008  09:48 AM ET

OK...so how come Ian Kennedy gets ROASTED in NY and the media for saying THE EXACT SAME THING Ben Sheets says above....double standard?? Comments anyone?

August 21, 2008  09:56 AM ET

The only problem with a slump like this is that it's happening during a pennant race..... if it would have happened in May, nobody would care..... but if you're going to get the big bucks, you can't go one for August / September.....

August 21, 2008  10:06 AM ET

That's a great point, Sir Robin. Several big name pitchers went thru slumps in May/June...... now is when people notice the most, though.

Because sheets has at least been a good pitcher when he can/not on the DL.. Kennedy just sux's

August 21, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Ian Kennedy gets roasted by the non_Yankee fans more so than the Yankee fans. But Ian Kennedy does not have years of solid performance behind him.

August 21, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Sheets' slump is worrisome in that normally, when a star pitcher gets added to a rotation, he usually takes the pressure OFF the previous go-to guy. If anything, Sheets should be getting a groove back, not reverting to sub-par form. But Yost is doing the right thing in defending Sheets.

Maybe Prince needs to slap Sheets around, after all. Or, at least, give him a bite of his vegan burger. Yummm!!

August 21, 2008  11:01 AM ET

how does this effect his value this off-season?
I think not that much, but most contracts seem to written as if a player's last season is all that exists, and how they will play forever.

Gasp! A Yankee fan that can say it like it is about their team/player, refreshing. You hit the nail right on the head, Sheets has done something in terms of performance, whereas Kennedy hasn't proved squat (yet?). He may have the 'right stuff' later, but I'm not seeing it now.

In regard to the Prince Fielder 'technique', "yes" Ten Rings it did work (on Parra) -- but do you really want to slap around a pitcher that comes to the ballpark with a "handle with care" sticker firmly affixed to his forehead? Bench him, send 'em down but don't smack this guy.

August 21, 2008  11:21 AM ET

Relax folks, Sheets has a bad month every year. Most pitchers have a bad month every year. As long as it's not a prelude to a DL stint, it will pass.

August 21, 2008  11:21 AM ET

Since he was 10-1 10 days before the Allstar break, he's now 1-6, and probably should be 0-8. Over rated, and needs to go. I can think of 6 pitchers on the Brewers staff who need to go. With the money we save, we could then keep CC Sabathis, and bring up our prospects. Won't happen though.
