Glavine sneaks in extra surgery

While Braves veteran Tom Glavine was under anesthesia for elbow surgery Thursday, Dr. James Andrews also did a relatively minor shoulder surgery on his pitching arm. That was the only surprising news out of Birmingham, where the 42-year-old left-hander went in for elbow surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon. Well, surprising for everyone except Glavine, Andrews and Braves officials. Turns out, Glavine and the Braves knew before Thursday that he would also have the arthroscopic procedure to "clean up" the labrum in his shoulder, although neither he nor the team announced it until after the operations were completed. Glavine had discomfort in his shoulder during the season and asked Andrews to care of that while Glavine was on the operating table.

Two for one, who does not like that? He is mostly done and this might buy him one to two more years. Good for him. Come on back to Billerica,Ma, Tom.

20 more starts tops!!!

Tom is done.. enjoy life after baseball and the family. Sometimes they can never let go... hmmm...brett?

Glavine has had a great career, and I hope he doesn't become the Gary Sheffield of pitching by hanging on too long and tarnishing his legacy.

August 22, 2008  07:44 AM ET

Steve Carlton was the worst HOF pitcher for hanging on. He kept trying out until even the minor league teams wouldn't give him a look.

20 more starts might be at least 15 wins!

How dare Glavine do something like schedule a medical procedure before consulting with the Knights Of The Keyboard......

August 22, 2008  09:17 AM ET

The TRUTH has also learned Glavine was circumcised too...

August 22, 2008  10:12 AM ET

While they had him up on the lift they checked his fluid levels and tightened his belts, tendons.

Glavine should go look at tape of Steve Carlton in his last 3-4 years when he wouldn't give it up. That should convince him to retire.

Was this a surgical "two for one deal" or was he billed for each procedure ???

If Glavine loves pitching that much, then good for him. Pitch as long as teams think you can help them.

But, if he thinks he'll be pitching another season or two for one more ring with the Braves, he'll be more surprised than he was when Willie Randolph pulled him out of the 7-run 1st inning debacle that fateful Sunday last September.

Oh, god... thank you for reminding me! Let no man every say Glavine was devastated by anything. He, and he alone, reserves the inalienable right to use "devastated" at his sole discretion. Thank you, FMSD, for reminding us of the Glavine Rules.
