Sophomore quarterback Kevin Riley was named the opening-day starter by Cal coach Jeff Tedford on Thursday night. Riley, who choreographed a 21-point comeback to earn Armed Forces Bowl MVP honors, emerged in the last portion of training camp. He consistently made the right reads, showed off his arm strength and created plays with his legs.

I'm just hoping former Lincoln High School receiver Nyan Boateng gets a fair shot out there at Cal.

Brooklyn's rooting for you Nyan!

This is ironic as h ell, since Riley should have been the starter all last season, but especially after the Bears off-week in October. What Riley has that Longshore doesn't have are the instincts a Qb should have: he makes things happen and he never says "die." He's a fighter where Longshore is not inspirational. Of course, Riley makes mistakes as that heartbreaker in the Oregon State game last which CAL should have won. But he is better to start at least than Nate. My, my. What Riley could have done with Lavelle Edwards, DeSean Jackson (though a troublemaker) and the rest of the offense, (Nyan Boateng, who is a BIG receiver, should figure prominently in the Bears' attack. He has tight end size certainly, but will be played at WR. [Bears have a good TE in Morrah.])

The big story here is Tedford though. He's got a lot to prove to the NCAA football community - and himself - after things went seriously off the rails last year. He had what amounted to an "all-star" cast, especially at wide receiver and he couldn't get it done. (I think he succumbed to ego: he took over as offensive coordinator last season, looking for more glory I imagine, when he had no business doing so. He should have managed the team and troublemakers like D-Jax. At least this year he's relinquished OC.) I'm thinking it's make or break for Jeff this year. He's a good coach, but it won't matter unless he wins. And he might jus engineer some upsets - Ducks and Trojans. CAL could surprise ya.

Sh ite. LaVell Edwards was coach at BYU for years. I meant "Lavelle Hawkins." Sory

I'd rather watch CAL (or most PAC 10 teams) play in any conditions than 2/3 of the SEC and 3/4 of the BIG TEN teams. They are BORING. Here's a great matchup: Michigan State and Indiana.

You just keep beating this very dead horse. Try reading some magazines for some new ideas.

Watson the same could be said about you and your Weis fat jokes. Your rhetoric is unbearable.

August 22, 2008  05:21 PM ET

Um then again he led a 21 point comeback against Air Force so I'm going to wait until he actually does that to a higher ranked Pac-10 team to say something

August 22, 2008  05:32 PM ET

I had a girlfriend who created play with her legs.

How much is Jeff Tedford pulling down? When was the last time he challenged for the PAC-10 title? I think UCLA, ASU, and Oregon will probably stomp Cal good for the next 2 years. Norm Chow, Dennis Erickson, and Oregon's coach are better.

Tedford made 2.8 million in FY 2007-08. Why? The Bears shared the Pac 10 champrionship in 2006. They've posted winning records every year since Tedford took over in 2002: 7-5, 8-6, 10-2, 8-4, 10-3, and 7-6.

You don't have a clue what you're talking about, do you? And good luck with them Huskers. Yeesh.

ONly a person that has never been an athlete would rip the Bowls. They are for the athletes and the communities. Coaches love any bowl because the team benefits the folowing season from the extra work. The programs benefit between recruiting and the exposure. The what ever Bowl is far better than"whatever ignorant" comments. remeber Riley ran off the field , ball in hand with time running out when a ll they needed was field goal to tie Oregon St and go OT. Which if memory serves me correctly they were #2 and a win and they would have been #1.
