McCarty checking his options

The Red Wings have a standing offer of a two-way contract to forward Darren McCarty for this season -- one salary if he's in the NHL, another for less money if he's in the minors. McCarty's agent, Patrick Morris, is taking some time first to determine whether another club might offer a better deal that assures McCarty of an NHL contract. Wings general manager Ken Holland said Thursday he last talked with Morris in early August. Holland doesn't anticipate McCarty agreeing to a deal with the Wings until the beginning of September at the earliest. Salary-cap limitations basically leave the Wings in position where they can't afford to offer McCarty more than the two-way deal.

This guy shold be happy he's even playing in the NHL, let alone for the Stanley Cup champs. It doesn't matter where he plays--guys like this are self-destructive, and he'll be broke again in a couple of years. Look at Theo Fleury.

Sometimes it takes some people longer to grow up than others. Everyone deserves another chance and let's hope the hard work he put in last season turns his life around. To put all these people in the same boat is bigoted.

McCarty should be happy the Wings offered hima contract at all. He was nowhere near the NHL last year till the end if I remember right. The Wings gave him another chance when nobody else would evn take a look at him. Sign the two way deal and thank God you even got that.

McCarty made some mistakes, no doubt. He is man enough to tell you that, he has never hid from anything. The guy is a warrior. He has earned his second chances through his work ethic and taking on all customers during a long and successful career. I am not a Wings fan, but I respect what the McCarty/Draper/Maltby line did for the Wings during their dominance. Give the guy a break.

How about the same contract, but allow McCarty to sit the entire first part of the season to rest up again.

Hey, Darren! I hear the Calgary Flames are looking for another tough guy to add to the 13 they already have!

I hear Claude Lemieux is looking for a caddy?

Or was that out of line?

August 22, 2008  11:15 AM ET

D Mac loves Detroit and the fans who have stood behind him. If it doesn't work out that he gets a contract with the Wings then oh well. Sadly, his addition to the team last year was more out of history rather then necessity. He doesn't bring that much to the team but might bring some for another. In the end, Mac will always be a fan favorite in Detroit.

I think AO has a bit of a jack o' lantern smile, doesn't he?

August 22, 2008  12:30 PM ET

For sure. Does the league provide a dental plan upon retirement?

I know that back in the old days you could have easily called Gump Worsley, Gum. But he played goalie without a mask so it's expected.

Bobby Clarke had a supremely gap toothed grin as well.

He did and was damn proud of it, too. One of my all time favorite players, even if he was a Flyer.

He could have played for Al Davis. Just win baby.

I still love popping my 1972 Summit Series DVD in the player and watching his hack job on Valeri Kharlamov's ankle. A thing of beauty and a joy to behold. Not one hint of subtlety.

Al would have loved to have had him. I read the quote by Punch Imlach, "If you want to fill the seats, get Perrault, if you want to win, get Clarke".

THAT is vintage Hank Kingsley :)

He mentioned Clarke so..... Spiny rules although I don't know about eating congress. Their approval is so low nobody would care.
