Mulder's unique rehab program

Mark Mulder's quest to get his left shoulder to cooperate with his plans to pitch again has taken turns for the aggressive, the inventive and the razor. The Cardinals pitcher, continuing what has become two years of persistent rehab for an injured shoulder, hired a personal yoga instructor to enhance his flexibility. He has met with more doctors in the past month than he has had major-league starts since a 2006 surgery. He even shaved his armpit so that a therapist's massage tool could really dig in there and tenderize the joint. All of it he's done with the understanding that it's possible none of it will work.

hmmmmm, and here I thought his unique rehab program was just to stay away from a pitching mound.

August 22, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Mr Mulder, your table with Mrs. Kerry Wood is ready

August 22, 2008  10:24 AM ET

At least the guy is trying....usually players just kick back and collect their cash. Yet stupid fans still have ignorant comments.

August 22, 2008  10:30 AM ET

I agree, ck. He's not Mark Prior...... the last couple of years with Mulder have been hugely dissapointing and frustrating, but I have never felt like Mulder wanted anything but to come back and help the Cardinals, and I think it has tore him up that he hasn't been able to.

August 22, 2008  11:44 AM ET

Mulder's rehab - get paycheck, deposit paycheck in the bank, say all the right things and take a shower after such a strenous work-out session !!!

I agree, nothing worse than some overpaid picher kicking back in so cal and collecting his paycheck as he makes one trip after another onto the DL. Pass the suntan lotion please.

signed Mark Prior

Yea he's trying. His workout routine involves waking up, staring at his bank statement, and going back to bed. He'll be fine soon. Seriously.

August 22, 2008  03:23 PM ET

Waking up, looking at that bank statement, and then retiring is what we like to call in the industry as a "Pavano"....

August 22, 2008  04:11 PM ET

Maybe he should just give all that money back, especially since he planned on getting hurt and his club owners tricked him into signing his contract. No need to be bitter, fellas--we're doing allright sitting around (probably on company time) questioning on his rehab efforts...

August 22, 2008  04:13 PM ET

not fair to prior. turns out the guy was misdiagnosed. kept going on dl, rehabbing, not getting better, all the while he needed surgery and was probably making things worse.

August 22, 2008  06:06 PM ET

Rehab is for quitters!

Was this for all 39 injuries or just one of them?

August 22, 2008  07:53 PM ET

Dusty - 39? that was just April and May for our pitching staff

August 22, 2008  08:00 PM ET

I know you guys continue to get a big laugh out of Prior. It is with great relief that he is now rotting in San Diego and making plenty of enemies there. At least Wood is still "Semi" productive. Only one or two DL trips a year. Par for his course.

August 22, 2008  09:12 PM ET

and only ONE Pavanno comment? Come on, we are better than this. I forgot, tomorrow is the BIG COMEBACK! Stay tuned.

August 23, 2008  12:08 AM ET

You know, Dusty...I really don't mean to make fun of his injuries.....but the only reason St Louisans still make fun of him is because he just seemed like such an arrogant jerk all the time......I know that is coming from the other side of the Cub-Card rivalry.....but there was something about his demeanor that just always rubbed me the wrong way. Wood has always been okay with me, and even Zambrano.....but Prior was just so easy to dislike as a Card fan.

August 23, 2008  07:28 AM ET

like jayEss said i guess it's their fault (the players) the clubs are so stupid to pay the money and give them the 5 year or longer contract that players should feel guilty and give the money back, if you could get the money and than have an injury happen to you what would you do get a life i doubt that you need to keep posting comments here and all they are were negative at best.

August 23, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Well, Prior is not so arrogant anymore. More of a milksop actually. He'll end up retiring the same as Mulder.

Great response TR. I agree with you on your other comments. Wood worked like hell to get back and always considered he felt obligated to the Cubs for his dl stints, Prior felt different. I understand the arrogant jerk thing si you'll understand why Cub fans detest LaRussa.
