Flyers to focus on Gomez signing

Forget Chris Drury. Every indication is he will end up in San Jose. Forget Danny Briere. He's really the wrong fit for the Flyers. And if Buffalo loses Drury, the Sabres have no choice but to re-sign Briere at any price. Look for Scott Gomez to be wearing orange and black next season. He's an ideal fit for the Flyers, both offensively and defensively.

flyers need more than gomez, come on now,

June 12, 2007  11:28 AM ET

Gomez has itchy feet. My bet is he won't be back in NJ. Lou is a great GM but I'm not sure he is a good coach to play for.

Memo to Scott : DO NOT GO TO FLYER-LAND. They are owned by a dinosaur who still sees the ghosts of Clarke, Schultz and Parent at centre ice. The Flyers are years away from getting back to respectability, because of Snyder's blind faith in Bob Clarke, who signed a long list of heavy contracts to players well past any significance. Do they ever have a goalie? Seems this has been the question here since Ron Hextall was first traded. Their defense is slow and in shambles and their forwards, save for a couple of youngsters, are very thin. Other than that, everything is rosy in sunny Philadelphia.

June 12, 2007  12:21 PM ET

Hes a great player but how wierd would it be rooting for him after all the **** hes done against us. Id rather have briere.

June 12, 2007  12:51 PM ET

joec, you're dumb and you obviously don't pay enough attention to the flyer's to make any substantial argument. the flyers began last season in shambles and never quite got out of the gate until after the trade deadline, which was far too late. But, Holmgrem did all the right things to make the flyers competitive and adding $20 million worth of veterans into the new mix this offseason makes them playoff contenders, no question. Putting Gomez next to Gagne makes the Flyers have a one-two punch as good as anyone in the league, and adding a veteran defender or two will shape up the defense real good.

the flyers just need to find a way to keep pucks out of their own net, they lost too many close games because play in their own end was horrible. I have faith in Holmgrem, he's no Bobby Clarke, that's for sure.

and bleedinggreen, gagne is one of the best goal scorers in the league, you need to put another one, like briere, right next to him. Gomez is a playmaker, a passer, he'd be perfect.

June 12, 2007  01:34 PM ET

Gomez is obviously a smart kid for picking Ian Pulver as an agent. Knowing that Ian Pulver is being considered for the NHLPA Head job can't hurt relations for Gomez with his future employers.

June 12, 2007  02:01 PM ET

Gomez would be a nice fit . And joec, you obviously don't know much about the Flyers, or their organization. In case you missed it, they picked up Martin Biron, and several young D-men at the trade deadline, and have a lot of up and coming young players. Now they need to add the best fit UFA's come July 1st.

June 12, 2007  02:11 PM ET

joec,

u r an idiot. get off ur knees, u blow more than the devils. the flyers have one of the most prestigous franchises in the nhl's history. scott gomez would be honered to play for the orange and black.
p.s.
i cant wait until ben eager and riley cote beat the living **** out of cam johnsson

June 12, 2007  02:52 PM ET

when was the last time the flyers won a cup? Gomez would not be honored to wear the stupid flyer colors. He won 2 cups with the Devs and now he is looking for a big pay day.

It's Cam Jansen not Johnson. Watch out for big bad ben eager and riley cote. wow that was a good one.

June 12, 2007  03:24 PM ET

Why is everyone picking on joec,he's doing what you're supposed to do here: voicing his opinion.I haven't heard anything about Drury going to San Jose (not to change the subject ).

June 12, 2007  03:37 PM ET

we need kimmo timonen too

June 12, 2007  04:08 PM ET

If Drury doesn't come back to the Avs, I hope he stays in the East. Sure don't want him biting the Avs in the butt so often.

June 12, 2007  04:31 PM ET

Drury to the Avs, Gomez to the Flyers, Briere back in Buffalo, Yashin to Washington, Timmonen back in Nashville. Colorado and Washington make the playoffs next year, Jersey and Buffalo remain competitive, and Philly gets back to respectablility

June 12, 2007  07:49 PM ET

broad street you speak like a classic philly fan ... pure reaction. I'd see Gomer going to Philly, as a good fit for the club. Management would love it because he'd put butts in the seats if things click. Maybe they'd let go of the bully part a little and play hockey with speed and passing. If they always have the Ranger's to fight if they want to do that on from time to time....oh but that didn't work out so well last time with the one punch and out. And it isn't a big relocation for Gomer. He could help lead that team but still missing pieces. Better, let's see Gomez in some place like Minnesota....no one would be looking for that one. Drury to SJ, Yashin to the Caps...I like that call. And Lou needs to get back upstairs not behind the bench because Jersey has some quality young guys that will step in for the loss of Gomez. They'll be there next year....first playoff season at The Rock.

June 12, 2007  08:12 PM ET

I love you Philly fans, all heart and no brains. The Flyers are a "prestigious" franchise? Since when? They played classy hockey in the '70's, where their biggest contribution was inspiring the movie "Slapshot" from all their goonery. They have about four decent prospects (Carter, Pittkanen, Richards and Parent). They have spent the DUMBEST money over the last decade than any other team (Hatcher, Rathje, Gratton, Roenick, Vanbiesbrouck etc... They have problems keeping pucks out of the net? WAKE UP! That usually means they are not that good of a club. Develop a goaltender! You haven't had one since Hextall in the late '80's. The Flyers are terrible. Get a grip and face reality, or just keep buying season's tickets from Uncle Ed, suckers.

June 12, 2007  08:13 PM ET

Oh... and by the way, if Marty Biron is your answer... well..........

June 12, 2007  10:33 PM ET

joe c is a tool

June 13, 2007  08:08 AM ET

I think it will be a done deal with Gomez wearing the O&B. He is the best fit of all the top centers available and will thrive in the Flyers aggressive forechecking attack. He still scored points in Jersey's boring (but effective) system but will really kick it up a notch when the reins are released in Philly.

He will not be brought in to score goals although he should double his 10 goals last season. He will brought in to set the plate for Gags and that is exactly what he will do.

I think Gomez has to be the top priority in this offseason. He is talented and young enough to play at a top level for the next 4 years when the Flyers should seriously contend for a Cup

June 13, 2007  09:42 AM ET

Gomez would be a great signing for the Flyers, as he would fit perfectly between Knuble and Gagne. Even without Gomez, the Flyers are already a much better team than last year, which shouldnt be that big of a surprise. They got an unbelievable return for Forsberg, ultimately resulting in Upshall, Parent, Biron (acquired for Nashville's 1st rounder), and a 3rd round pick. They turned Freddy Meyer, a fringe NHLer at best, for Zhitnik and then Zhitnik for Braydon Coburn. They are young and deep on defense, they have a solid core of forwards to build around, and they finally have some sense of stability in net. They are only a few complementing players away from being a competitive team. If they fill the void at center on the top line with either Gomez or Briere, bring in a solid #2 or #3 defenseman, and get a little more depth on the wing, they will be a competitive team.

i like the way you think wrobs. and yeah, joec is just voicing his opinions, but his opinions suck. like i said, he obviously doesn't pay much attention. Clarke is gone, Holmgrem is the man in charge now. And did anyone watch hatcher the second half of the season?? the way he played was the reason for all the trade offer's and the reason why we wasn't traded. the flyer's are no doubt playoff contenders next year.
