Hal Steinbrenner: Yanks not done

Hal Steinbrenner's impromptu meetings with Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman added another body last Friday at Yankee Stadium. Wanting to make sure the players understood the front office still believed in the players and interested in hearing another voice, Steinbrenner invited captain Derek Jeter into Girardi's office for the first time this season. "I wanted to let him know that ownership believes and is optimistic," Steinbrenner told The Post from Tampa yesterday. "It was kept that simple. I wanted him to know that was the case." The message from George Steinbrenner's youngest son came three days after his older brother, Hank, explained injuries have cost the Yankees this year and turned his eyes toward 2009.

August 22, 2008  07:40 AM ET

it ain't over till its over... GO YANKEES...

August 22, 2008  07:48 AM ET

Yankees are done for this year. Time to get ready for next year.

August 22, 2008  08:00 AM ET

This post season will be so nice without the Yankees or the Red Sox in it. I love it.

August 22, 2008  08:12 AM ET

Well you're half right- the season isn't over, however the smack regarding the Yankees making the post season is pretty much over...

August 22, 2008  08:19 AM ET

looks like they are done after last nights game

August 22, 2008  08:23 AM ET

I am a Yanks fan, but Hal is dead wrong.

A) No starting pitching after Moose and Pettitte.
B) Cano, Posada, Cabrera, Jeter, Matsui all having sub-par offensive years means death.
C) Hughes and Kennedy collapsing killed them early.

They have to get rid of the Matsui, Damon, Giambi, Abreu, Plain and simple.. they have been paying top dollar to players who are nnot worth the money for way too long. Get some new blood in the room. This team has never come close to winning anything. They will be remembered for pulling the biggest Yankee choke in history by blowing a 3-0 lead to the Sox in '04, nothing else.

no yankees +no red sox= no one watching

August 22, 2008  08:30 AM ET

to say nither the sox or yankees are going to make it is just stupid. we get it, you like to disagree with everyone and be "edgey". but there is no way that the sox or yanks dont make the playoffs. plus there is a month left in the season. who knows what will happen

There are other fans out there. The Ynkees and the Red Sox are not the only teams that play baseball. The Mets have a large fan base as well as the halos.

Why is there no way?
The mighty yankeees or sox MUST make the playoffs for everything to be right in the world?
Dumbest comment I ever heard.

Agreed, except the mets aren't making it, so there fan base doesn't matter.

In that picture, Ponson looks like he's thinking, "Hank, would you just shut the **** up already!"
