Wannstedt faces bowl expectations

Dave Wannstedt, in his fourth year, has posted an underwhelming 13-19 record against I-A competition (16-19 overall) and has yet to take Pitt to a bowl game (The Panthers had been to five bowl games in a row before his arrival). He has recruited well and has been a great ambassador for the program. He now has most of his talent in place and that means finding a way to consistently win games.

Nothing like WIN now, or face the "cleat" in your arse.

August 22, 2008  07:41 AM ET

With Stull back the expectations are not long shots but facts.

August 22, 2008  07:43 AM ET

Whoops...meant to add that they had also lost their #1 WR and #1 lineman and some others last year due to injuries before the season even started. Will be nice to have them ALL back this year.

Miami to Pittsburgh. What trash heap will he take on next?

August 22, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Don't forget that he also destroyed a good Bears team before he turned Miami into a mess!

August 22, 2008  09:38 AM ET

With their schedule, they had better have a winning record this year.

August 22, 2008  09:42 AM ET

How does this re-tread keep getting jobs? He has won nothing since jumping off Jimmy Jones' coat tails.

I'm not feeling Pitt. They will get to a bowl game but they are behind West Virginia, Rutgers and South Florida in my opinion.

Take out Rutgers and I would be inclined to agree.

I have to laugh at the Penn State trolls that continue to delude themselves that they sit atop the college football world. Try finishing higher than fourth more than once a decade in an overrated conference, then look down at a program JoePud is afraid to play anymore.

August 22, 2008  01:37 PM ET

NWPA....weren't you hugged enough as a child? That is an actual clinical diagnosis.

August 22, 2008  01:39 PM ET

Last Call....how 'bout that Pitt vs WVU game, huh? "We shocked the world!"

You would think NWPA and his hidden profile would be more concerned with the PU players antics off the field so they can stay eligible.....

August 22, 2008  02:51 PM ET

pitiful pitt will be in the toilet bowl.

August 22, 2008  02:51 PM ET

Penn State fans are some of the worst when it comes to wearing blinders TR. They have been brainwashed growing up by all of JoePud's self promoting hogwash.

Some still see their Lions as some elite program on a national level because they get 110,000 knuckleheads to show up to watch them stomp Coastal Carolina. These same knuckleheads then can't figure out why they can't beat the top teams in their own conference. Ohio State & Michigan regularly clean their clock on the field & in recruiting...even in PA.

Then they finish 8-4 with the 8 wins coming against non bowl teams ( unless one squeaks in as a 5th place finish in the Big 10) and they figure that gives them the reason to puff out their chests and put other programs down.

No play, for Mr. Gray!

Dave Wannstedt... [after three years] ...has yet to take Pitt to a bowl game, [when they] had been to five bowl games in a row before his arrival...

Ouch. Nothing says "mediocrity" like doing worse than your predecessor. We Husker fans know just how that story ends.

August 22, 2008  05:55 PM ET

I love Pitt fan jealousy. Lets analyze what Last Call had to say.
1. 110k fans to watch us stomp Coastal Carolina
Review: How many fans does Pitt average per game and how many will show up to watch Pitt vs Bowling Green, Buffalo, or Iowa?
2. Can't beat top teams in conference and finish 8-4
Review: Michigan is the only school with a winning streak over PSU in the Big 10. 8-4 would be a success for Dave W. this year wouldn't it? 8-4 for Penn State spells out 'Joes last year'.

Wipe your Pitt tears away with your terrible towel and maybe you'll feel better.

What I want to know is what school will Pitt up-charge for tickets this year since Penn State isn't on their schedule?
