Will Irish's new D pay off?

Though it remains to be seen how good the Notre Dame defense will be, Fighting Irish players are excited about the new aggressive schemes. Like last year, the Irish are using a 3-4 scheme that calls for an outside linebacker to sometimes line up as a down lineman who might rush the passer or drop back in coverage. This year the other outside linebacker frequently will be a converted safety as the Irish attempt to get more speed on the field. "We expect to make a lot of plays, help our offense a lot, help our team a lot," safety David Bruton said. Defense is not something the Irish have been known for recently. They haven't ranked in the top 30 in total defense or the top 40 in scoring defense since 2002.

Only if the Pope gets involved. He runs the show at ND. Oh yeah, and NBC's TV contract.

Obligatory Charlie Weis weight joke:

Charlie is so fat, it takes the entire team to push him on the tackle sled.

And the 'new D' will not payoff

Maybe Weiss has a live feed of the games go directly to Belichek and he calls the defensive plays. Anything is possible

August 22, 2008  08:55 AM ET

We will still win more than 3 games this year, I guarantee it (I think)!

August 22, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Who is Weiss? It's Weis...sad even ND fans can't get their coach's name right..

Bringing in John Tenuta was key in getting ND D back on track. Even though he's a Michigan Man, Corwin Brown can recruit with the best of them but hasn't proven he can coach yet. Hence why Tenuta was brought in.

August 22, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Will they get to play real games against that crappy ND offense?

August 22, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Jon Tenuta is a great D coordinator. ND's defense will be fine.

J. Hova, you are an optimist. It's going to be an interesting season in South Bend.

PS Fat joke: Charlie Weis is so fat his belt size is "equator." (And yes, I stole it.)

You need to get more material. You're essentially repeating yourself. Time for new directions in comedy.
