Trouble finding Kimbo opponent

EliteXC's Oct. 4 CBS card in Ft. Lauderdale is shaping up as a do-or-die show. The card will feature the biggest stars in the promotion, Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano. We've known for weeks that Carano will fight Kelly Kobold. On the other hand, naming a Slice opponent has taken forever. You get the sense that EliteXC has no idea what to do with the highly marketable but very inexperienced fighter. Word has it that the promotion actually called around to some media members to see what the reaction would be to certain opponents being selected. It's looking more and more like the decision is down to Ken Shamrock or Sean Gannon (pictured - good tip from Cagepotato.com). They're both sellable fights and will deliver big-time on the front end. The problem is managing the back end. EliteXC should be more worried about the backlash after the fight. Between the fact that Gannon looks like a fat slob and the feeding frenzy that could result in squaring off two guys who gained fame in a streetfight, the old-timers in the print media will have a field day.

Pitting him against Gannon wouldn't be a fair fight...Gannon is a cop and cops are trained to beat black people.

Loki...DAYUUUUM.... funny shyte

I think they would rather have Gannon fight him. Slice lost the first time, but he wasn't "trained" like he is now....not saying he's really trained, just enough to win. As old as Shamrock is, I still think Shamrock would beat Kimbo's a(ss).

Shamrock would kill Slice... Gannon would be their best bet, let to street brawlers go at.

Hahaha... this article tells the truth... "Gannon looks like a fat slob"... and Loki, good look on that one. Funny as heeelll..

It must be kinda hard to find Kimbo an opponent. At this point, you know you're just the lamb being sent into the slaughter... you've been targeted by the marketing geniuses at EXC as someone that looks strong enough to not be torn apart by the media, but whose skill is so low that Kimbo will tear you apart so they can hype him up more... must suck to be that guy...

Its tough to protect Kimbo the way they do, any decent grappler malls him, and he lays around and hopes for some reason he gets back to his feet so he can land a prayer and win the fight. I think your all right Shamrock would take him to the floor and destroy him, fatty is slower and far more susceptible to the haymaker??? If you want to protect your meal ticket get some softies and line them up for him

IamRight - everyone's been saying that so far and so far Kimbo has beaten all his opponents. How about stop hating, and start appreciating.

August 22, 2008  02:32 PM ET

Honestly, I think that Kimbo would beat Ken. I don't think he has anything left in him. When was the last time he looked like he was "in" any of the fights he has been in lately? He has gotten completely dominated in any of his recent fights. I think he's too slow to get Kimbo to the ground. His one should would be with a leg lock.

i read recently that Dan Savern is still fighting at 53. And has a nice winning steak.. This would be an interesting fight.

Kimbo is overrated and hasn't really faced anyone of quality. If he gets tossed onto the mat, he's toast.

August 22, 2008  04:35 PM ET

Put him in the ring with Brock Lesnar. No matter the outcome, we'll have one less overrated schmuck to worry about.

Putting him in the ring against Gannon would be a big ratings draw, since Gannon did go toe-to-toe with Kimbo despite interference from Kimbo's crew.

August 22, 2008  04:43 PM ET

If you can withstand Kimbo's initial attack, you can beat him.
If he improves his cardio he will be hard to beat.

August 23, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Shamrock might braek a hip if he tried to get in the ring again...

August 24, 2008  12:05 AM ET

Ken Shamrock is a legend, but he hasn't made it out of the first round in his last five fights and is 2-8 in his last ten fights. He still looks the part, but doesn't have it anymore, Kimbo would destroy him.

Lesnar on the other hand would rip Kimbo's arm off and beat him to death with it. Lesnar may be overrated by the casual MMA fan, but he is so far ahead of Kimbo in MMA ability it is not even fair.

August 24, 2008  04:44 AM ET

I think Kimbo's size advantage would be to much for Shamrock. If he is the one they chose it will be because of his name only, and the fact that people may buy it to see someone they have heard of fight Kimbo. Yeah people have heard of Tank Abbot, but in all due respect to Tank just the older and white version of Kimbo.

I like the title of this article. They aren't having a hard time finding him an opponent. They are having a hard time finding anyone with some name recognition that he can beat.
