Celtics taking chance on Miles

When you're the reigning world champions, you can afford to take some chances. That's what the Celtics did by signing free agent forward Darius Miles yesterday. Miles, a 6-foot-9 forward, hasn't played in the NBA for two years due to microfracture surgery on his right knee. Terms of the deal were not announced. "Darius has been in twice for workouts with us and has impressed us with his progress, health and attitude," Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. "Darius will have the next couple of months to prove to myself and coach (Doc) Rivers that he can help us win." The signing has little monetary risk for the Celtics, given that Miles is already assured of making $18 million over the next two seasons from his guaranteed contract with Portland. According to reports, if Miles plays 10 games for the C's, the remaining $18 million of his six-year, $48 million salary goes back on Trail Blazers' books.

No risk, all reward deal. Only a deal to go to training camp and the Celtics can't lose here. This is the type of deal that makes championships.

I agree. Boston can't lose. If it doesn't work out, the Celtics have very little invested. If it does work, it costs the Trailblazers. i'm surprised noone else took a chance on him.

this has virtually nothing to do with the celtics. It is a stategic manuever meant to f with the Blazers salary room. The Blazers are positioned to make a strong move. So much so that someone I know suggested they would win three championships in the next ten years. This is the kind of move that will ensure the Blazers don't three championships in the next 25 years.

Miles has been a failure since he came out of high school.. he's a guy who's never showed it. jsut showed "potential" maybe gettini back into the game will make him work ..

Low risk for the potential reward. Has some baggage, but KG won't let him be a knucklehead on the Celtics.

9 mil a yr won't affect the blazers cap room as much as people think, esp
with raef lafrentz's expiring contract

he may show out after missing 2 years who knows but losing posey wont bring them a championship any time soon!

August 23, 2008  12:14 PM ET

well worth the risk.

Nothing to lose, might as well take him.
He's a great dunker, an good defender as well.

August 23, 2008  12:48 PM ET

good pickup for the celtics. i think he can contribute decently off the bench if he keeps his attitude in check and stays healthy.

What exactly is Miles good at again? Defense and rebounding? I know he could never shoot.

August 23, 2008  01:48 PM ET

he will be a decent scorer and defender off the bench

He's a really good dunker, and is great at getting to the foul line, and as a result sometimes explodes, like when he scored 47 points in a game. He can also rebound well and steal and block very well.

hes real good at destroying locker room chemistry and dropping pistols outside strip clubs

August 23, 2008  03:21 PM ET

that too...

He should have gone to St. John's like he should have but I'll always root him on.
