Chamberlain faces 30-pitch test

Joe Girardi isn't sure when Joba Chamberlain will return from the DL or what role he will be in if he does. Chamberlain, who has been out since August 4 with rotator-cuff tendinitis in the right shoulder, will throw a 30-pitch bullpen session today consisting of fastballs and change-ups. If all goes well he expects to throw breaking balls next week. Asked if Chamberlain will return to the rotation, Girardi was vague.

well i guess if those 30 pitches could get the yanks to the playoffs then this story would matter.

This story would not matter if not for 2 things.

1. The media already has this guy in the Hall of Fame.
2. Hankie will cry if the story isn't printed.

I'd be worried if a guy at his age is already breaking down. Where is the outcry that Hankie drove this decision?

Hey, guess what I heard FN, there are twenty-nine other teams in the MLB not named the Yankees, and five of which are actually in a playoff race, unlike the Yanks. Give the Joba, Hank, et. al **** a rest.

Nice photo! Looks like he's got a whole box of Twinkies stashed in his gullet.

the squib was from the NYPost, which is expected to have daily notes about the Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets, etc etc ... that SI picked it up caters to both Yankees-haters and Yankees-lovers ... remember that the Yankees franchise is the most famous in all of sports.

Joba is a great pitcher, the Yankee's need to be very carefull with him, he is a kid and should be fine.. i would like to see him come back this year but should be handled the right way like in the BP.

The mayor of Boston, ladies and gentlemen.

Why is this a story? Dozens of others are coming back too.

Does anyone else fear he could be like this generation's Dizzy Dean? I'm not a doctor by any stretch of the imagination, but i don't think you can worsen a tendinitis injury but you definitely can hurt something if you make adjustments to relieve the pain. Kennedy looks like he has a good amount of potential if he can stay healthy, but I'm not sold on Hughes having a very good future. We all know Joba can pitch at this level and has lots of potential, but it would be absolutely asanine to risk it for this. They're 11 beind Tampa and 5.5 behind Boston for the Wild Card. They play 2 more series against each of them, but Joba isn't gonna play everyday. Let him sit for the rest of the year and start him again next year. It usually takes quite a while to fix tendinitis.

Shut him down - the Yankees are on a "wing and a prayer" !!

August 24, 2008  12:50 AM ET

If the Yankees pitch him at all prior to next Spring..... then they don't deserve the abuse we heap on them.....

Girardi's job is not to be vague with the NY media because they take that as the sky is falling.
