Ward: NFL players must do too much

Hines Ward thinks somewhere along the line the NFL should reduce the amount of football its players must endure, either in the preseason or the offseason. "It's long, monotonous, especially with OTAs," said Ward, entering his 11th NFL season. "You do all those OTAs, why not cut back on the preseason games?" With all the spring workouts, Ward believes the players no longer need four preseason games to get ready for the regular season. He says three would be perfect.

The good news Hines, is that ownership is planning to cut some of the pre-season games!

The bad news is that they are going to replace them with more OTA's in the form of games!

Preseason is just a way for someone to get hurt for nothing anyhow. Win or lose the game doesnt matter. If you have position battles then do something in practice to decide. Preseason could cost a team everything if they lost starting QB

boohoo!! U guys get paid millions to perform a couple of months a year and your complaining? RETIRE if u want a break! Think about the military, you dont get paid that much and you put your heart and soul into everything you do, just as a nfl player should do. You get paid to perform, not complain!

Hard to feel sorry for guys who make millions and only have to work about 7 months out of the year......get over yourself, Ward and stop whining.

True LOKI. I am currently in Iraq for my 3rd year deployment and I will never see the money these people do. The lowest paid guy on any team is what like 600,000 a year? It will take me atleast 10 years to make that for defending everyones freedom

August 23, 2008  10:52 AM ET

I agree. I like Hines and think he is one of the best recievers with great character, but when you get paid millions to play a sport, I can't feel that sorry for you. The military given the importance and risk level involved should offer a lot more in terms of pay and benefits. It seems as if everythings backwards.

Money is in entertainment not freedom. Maybe it would be the other way around if we had to actually get our freedom back, maintaning just doesnt stick out like it would if we never had it. Being in the military I cant even afford to go to a football game

August 23, 2008  10:57 AM ET

You know what I'm tired of hearing idiots whine about how much money players make visavis they do.. Who cares? You signed up for the miltary so quit your whining or get out. I signed up for PD knowing exactly how much i'd make.. Nobody **** about what Tom Cruise makes.. so quit whining.. if you're so resentful go watch college then..

August 23, 2008  11:06 AM ET

They only play 16 regular season games for the whole year! What is he crying about?

I thought he was talking about all those boring OTA's. Aren't they optional team activities? As for decreasing the number of pre-season games, I still say all four are necessary for coaches to evaluate young talent and trim the roster.

As long as your income is dependent on other peoples taxable income you will never receive the pay you deserve. In other words, if football players got paid with the money the IRS takes from you they'd be lucky to make $30,000 a year. But don't think you aren't appreciated by us for the job you're doing, because you are. =-]

Your right i picked my job i signed y contract. Im not complaining about working too many days , or being away from my wife and kids too much, you know why? Cause that is my job. I was talking about a above comment so calm down. Im not like these football players who know what is expected of them and get to sign for a certain amount of money and then be like you know what I think im too good for that give me more. I earn my rank I earn y pay raises but You know who decides that the people in charge of me, not ME

I think Ward should think about how much they get paid compared to the Average person Vs. How much time they get off compared to the Average person...They make millions and get an off season larger than just about all the other major sports not to mention the regular work place goes 40 hrs a week all year around ... Quit crying and play football..

August 23, 2008  01:26 PM ET

WOW!!! If your job gets monotonous imagine if you actually did it year round like real people. WHINY BABY!!!

August 23, 2008  01:29 PM ET

you know , hes right..these guys are technically working all year round...theyve got 2 month of training camp..16 weeks of football(average player) and theyve got those ota's i would say tone down the training camp and ota's and lenghthen the schedule
