Irish lose starting TE for season

On Friday morning, Mike Ragone, an expected starter for Notre Dame at tight end, underwent season-ending knee surgery. A short while later, Kyle Rudolph deflected a query regarding what was easiest about his first preseason camp. "I wouldn't say anything's been easy so far," Rudolph said. Wait until he sees what's next. The surgery to repair Ragone's left anterior cruciate ligament demands that Rudolph, a talented 255-pound freshman, now play a significant role if Notre Dame doesn't want to skip a beat offensively. Junior tight end Will Yeatman remains a reliable starting option, but Ragone's injury places a huge imperative on Rudolph holding up physically. Charlie Weis has lauded Rudolph's ability in the passing game, and he averaged 18.2 yards per catch as a high school senior. But his consistency at the line of scrimmage becomes critical.

August 23, 2008  01:49 PM ET

Good news for UM, might give them a shot at another "W"

good luck in rehab ragone. We lost ragone but gained the No. 1 TE prospect from the '08 class Kyle Rudolph, and he has been looking good in preseaon practice. He was probably gonna start anyways.

Easy river1017, lets not kick a man when he's down, except for notre dame, notre dame is the worst football team ever put on the face of this earth, when was the last time they beat michigan state for crying out loud. jimmy clausen sucks

August 23, 2008  02:08 PM ET

i stand corrected, they beat MSU recently, but still not good. Charlie Weis is fat

August 23, 2008  02:15 PM ET

What's this got to do with playing Apalachian State? Snapping the ball over the QB head is part of the plan you idiot.

You have filithy Rodriguez coaching your team. I would rather for my Coach to be Fat A%^ than a dishonest rat. What can I say a Wolverine does come from the RAT family in a sort of way. I mean, Bo is flipping over in his grave right now. At least my Fat A%$ Coach is a stand up guy from Dirty Jersssss. Get it together USC beats you guys every year just as much as we get beat, but I our games have been closer. Our talent level is closing the gap, what are you doing about OSU?

August 23, 2008  02:42 PM ET

The wheels of the bus come off and off,
off and off, off an off
the wheels of the bus come off and off
because Notre Dame is DOOMED (not Domed).

August 23, 2008  02:42 PM ET

good luck in rehab ragone. .

Rehab? I said no, no, no.

August 23, 2008  03:37 PM ET

Ghost Rider,
What are we doing about OSU? We changed our entire coaching staff. Rich Rodriguez is a lyer? Sorry, we dont take the ten commandments so seriously in ann arbor. And since you are so into biology, wolverines and rats arent even in the same family...Weis is more closely related to a whale than a wolverine is related to a rat

August 23, 2008  03:43 PM ET

snapping the ball is part of the plan? Weis a genius

August 23, 2008  04:01 PM ET

Great. Now Weis has another excuse to suck out loud and the knuckleheads that hired him have an excuse to pay the gazillion dollars he makes for sucking. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of folks.

I really like the fact that so many people here are making fun of an injury to a kid! That's really low, especially coming from so many cowards that hide thier profile so that they won't be challenged by anyone. The comments usually come down to this on Notre dame 1) Charlie is fat. How observant, glad to see that Yale education didn't go to waste. 2) Notre Dame sucks. Compared to who? The other schools who don't graduate 90% of thier players or those that teams 90% of football fans who would rather go shoe shopping with thier wives than watch on TV?

August 23, 2008  04:27 PM ET

Tough loss. He's a pretty good player. ND has some depth there but it hurts to lose Ragone.

August 23, 2008  04:28 PM ET

Little Ann Arbor,

Your right the Wolverine is not a rat but a Weasel, now if that is not appropriate for DickRod, I am not sure what is.

August 23, 2008  04:41 PM ET

Good one, make fun of the mascot, that is relevant. Are you telling me you have never quit a job to take a better one?
P.S. Wolverines are badass animals that take down a moose all by themselves..impressive
