Falcons' physical play angers Titans

The Titans pride themselves on being a physical team. The Falcons are trying to establish the same identity under new Coach Mike Smith. The Titans took issue with the way the Falcons went about it during Atlanta's 17-3 preseason victory Friday night in the Georgia Dome. The Titans and Falcons combined for 17 penalties for 163 yards. The game was interrupted numerous times because of fights after the whistle. Four Falcons were called for 15-yard personal-foul penalties, including one against lineman Quinn Ojinnaka for a chop block. Two Titans flagged for personal fouls said they got caught up in retaliation mode. Titans Coach Jeff Fisher chose his words carefully. "This is going to be between the league and the Falcons. I am out of it. I'm moving on -- and the league will handle it,'' Fisher said. "There were a lot of things that should've been called that were not called. -- We're not going to back down. I told them not to back down.'' Smith, who took over for Bobby Petrino this offseason, has coached his players to push the limit. Fisher said that showed up on game tape of the Falcons. Smith called it "physical" football.

Not a big fan of unnecessary penalties (especially in preseason), but if Smith can bring some fire back to the Falcons then so be it......after last year, they need it badly.

Good Lord.........are football players getting as soft as the rest of us?

August 23, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Jeff Fisher: I'm mad because some of my players punked out and we got torched by the 2nd overall pick, Matt Ryan and our QB Vince Young is one of the most inaccurate quarterbacks to ever start in the NFL. waahhh waahhhh wahhh *pity party*

I don't get why he is complaining, it's football, play the game. The Falcons and Matt Ryan are looking good too by the way. The O-line isn't playing bad, the receivers looked good, the defense wasn't terrible, and Jerious Norwood and Michael Turner will be a great duo. The Falcons could be a serious team next season, I think Matt Ryan should start some of the games if not all of them this season because of how great he has looked this pre season.

Morning Lady, I hope you didn't go to any great length to watch the Pats last night. Ugghh!

Anyway, the Titans are one of the dirtiest freaking football teams in the league. I'm thinking the bully just got punched in the mouth and now we get to watch him cry.

After going 16 or so months without TV my husband got a rabbit ears antenna with a UHF loop but it won't pull in the CBS affiliate so I didn't see the game at all. I listened to it on the radio and watched it on Game Center. When in the hell is BB going to sit Matt Cassell down and let the other Matt play?

August 23, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Theres a difference between being physical and playing dirty. I love to see a good clean hard hit, but when you start chop-blocking, subtly grabbing the face mask in pile ups, extracurriculars after the play---that's just dirty, and its usually done by players with an inferior skill set--that's why they do it-to compensate. Most of the dirty antics are not even seen by the average fan on television. I still say the Falcons will be as soft as cotton when the real season starts and Mat Ryan isn't talented enough to make them winners.

SMith has to instill a new physical style of play and I'm all for it. The Falcs have been soft as hell since Dan Reeves left.. too bad for Fisher.. the Titans are used to dishing it out..

August 23, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Lady, It appears from what I'm reading in the Boston papers that BB is giving Cassell every opportunity to play himself out of a roster spot. Last night was horrible. I don't really care if they win presason games, but there appears to be no fire in the belly with this team right now. It also doesn't appear as though they have a lot of confidence in Matt Cassell.

Chicagojeff, the Titans are a team that likes to push the envelope and feels they can intimidate other teams. Watching the Pats play them a couple of years ago, it was the same thing. Lot's of tough talk before the game, and lot's of whining after. The Patriots smashed them in the mouth repeatedly and the Titans resorted to their usual dirty play.

Why? Isn't that the object of this otherwise meaningless exercise? To see what you've got?

Every prospective player knows he is being evaluated and is doing his best to make an impression that hopefully will land him a job in the NFL. Of course he's going to play hard! Wouldn't you?

Don't know whether it was Gil Santos or Gino Capeletti who called the way the Pats were playing 'dreadful' but he sure hit it on the head. With Cassell as the leader out there, they were dreadful. At least I hope that's why they were dreadful. It reminded me of the way Tony Eason lead the team during Super Bowl XX and then Steve Grogan came in (Matt Guteirez (sp) for Cassell), it was too little, too late. I haven't given up yet though. :)

If you're reading this Weapon X or PhillyDave, I'm never going to be an Eagles fan so give it up. =]

Cry me a river! Football was made to be a physical sport. The Titans are going to have to relize that ANY team and get physical

August 23, 2008  11:19 AM ET

I'm holding out hope that the Pats are just sandbagging until the games count.
Don't get too excited about the Eagles fans razzing you. The preseason games are all they really have to look forward to. Once the real season starts, McFlabb's pouch will start shriveling up like a raisin and the Eagles will suck like they always do.
Poor Brian Westbrooke, stuck on a crappy team for another 4 years.

How Machiavellian of you. I hope you're right. I've been having flashbacks to the '70's the way they're playing right now. I lived it once, don't want to see it again. lol
