Yankees to look different in '09

The Yankees might look much different at this time next year. Brian Cashman would be able to clear things out with so many high-profile players at the end of their deals. Jason Giambi has a $21 million option, and you can bet the House That Ruth Built it won't be picked up. Bobby Abreu is also up. Mike Mussina is at the end of his deal. The four-year, $39 million pact of Carl Pavano is ending. Half-year rental Pudge Rodriguez will likely be gone. Mussina's future is a question. While he could be on the way to his first 20-win season at age 40, Mussina might want to leave baseball on top of his game. Andy Pettitte also goes year to year, and while his often-balky left elbow has held up well, he has not committed to next season yet. There's the uncertainty of Jorge Posada, who wants to catch next year, though the Yankees have no idea how much his surgically repaired right shoulder will bounce back. This much is certain: Xavier Nady is a player the Yankees really like, and he is very much in their future plans.

Giambi, Abreu, Pavano - gone.

Bring back Moose, Pudge.

Sign Manny and Sabbathia.

August 24, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Abreu will be back, keep Nady, I am not sure about Posada, he went down very early in the year. Sign CC, maybe Ben Sheets, Burnett...sign some pitching for once..

Wow, I put my Yankee-hating comment in the wrong T&R today folks. Check the Yankee-Burnett T&R.

Good article. I have been convinced that Agreu is definately a keeper, and Moose definately has at least one good season left. But we're talking about '09! We still have an outside shot this season! Just in case, though, someone shoot off a flare ...

August 24, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Goodbye Bobby and Jason. Nady will be in right, they'll platoon Damon and Matsui between DH and left. They could keep Abreu and use Nady at first here and there.
Pudge is gone unless they decide to put Jorge at first.

August 24, 2008  01:07 PM ET

Nady, Jeter, ARod, Abreu, Matsui, Wang, Mussina, Chamberlain, Rivera -- they're the only guys I'd bring back for sure. Let everyone else truly compete. Get Teixeira. get a center fielder. no to Manny, no to Sabathia.

August 24, 2008  01:36 PM ET

I think the Yankees should sign Pavano to a long term extension for a lot of money.....He pitched well yesterday.

August 24, 2008  01:57 PM ET

Are you f'n kidding me!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

August 24, 2008  03:33 PM ET

Why don't the Steinbrenners do us all a favor and start serving out the Jim Jones Kool-Aid to the Yankees now?

August 24, 2008  04:15 PM ET

I hope the Yankees sign Sabathia to a 10-year, $400 million deal - then C.C. says his elbow hurts and goes home.

August 24, 2008  05:04 PM ET

NO to Giambi, Mussina, Pavano, Pettite, Pudge and Ponson. I'm tired of old players who the Yankees think can still play. We need some young talent like the Rays or Marlins have. Yes to Nady. Go after C.C. hard and maybe Manny.

August 24, 2008  05:25 PM ET

C.C. - yes
Teixeria - yes
Manny - no
Burnett - yes
Mussina - yes
Pettite - yes
Giambi - no

Joba to the bullpen first half
Rotation of CC, Wang, Burnett, Pettite, Mussina
Hughes and Kennedy start the year in the minors

I think the Yanks are doing just fine. I wouldn't change a thing.

August 24, 2008  06:44 PM ET

Wanted Man do you smoke crack?

But yeah honestly we only need to sign CC and Tex. And whatever free agent relievers are out there.

August 24, 2008  08:13 PM ET

went to the game today...definitely keep Nady, maybe Bobby too. It has shown this year that they can't have too many outfielders. CC and Tex would be nice, bye bye Jason and the golden thong, Our bullpen looks alright with Bruney, Veras, Marte, Robertson, Giese and Edwar, but can always use improvement. It seems we can't keep anyone healthy these days

August 24, 2008  08:26 PM ET

I think Teixiera will be a Yankee. CC is a definite maybe. Garland or Lowe perhaps. They'll be fishing with a lot of bait though.

August 24, 2008  09:02 PM ET

They definitely need to get younger to compete with the Red Sox and Rays.

August 24, 2008  09:11 PM ET

No s.

Moose will stay. K-Rod would be great if egos can be checked and he's not dead tired.

Wanted Man do you smoke crack?

No, I'm more into train robbery and selling liquor to Injuns.
