07:32 AM ET 08.24 | Italian club Catania has been pursuing the big USA central defender Oguchi Onyewu and hoping to work out a deal with Standard Liege. This morning, though, I got word from sources on this side of the Atlantic that the move will not happen. There is apparently some interest in France, but with time running out on the transfer window, he seems likely to remain in Belgium for now. With Gooch's contract set to expire after this season, rendering him a free agent, Liege needs to find a buyer by this winter.

I'd love to see him in Serie A. I think he would gain a lot of important experience playing in a higher level league.

Seventh. Gooch would get a lot of defensive education in the Serie A.

I hope he learns to play with his feet before the transfer window is over. He will struggle in Serie A league take my word for it.

What is the over-under on how many red cards he will get for fouls once he is beat?

i think he will succeed in Serie A, but he'll struggle to make first team for at least a season....

say what you want about him, but for the USMN over the past few friendlies, he was on perfect form..... dont think he's gotten a card this year for the USMN.... his central defense (bar the spanish goal) has been solid.... however, one doesnt have to look too far back to see his reckless form... who knows tho...

Serie A has always been known for its technical defending. Positioning is key among Italkian defenders as is an ability to play with your feet and make key passes out of the back. While I would love to see Gooch gain experience in Serie A, playing time is a huge concern wherever he lands. I just don't see it in Serie A.

think about it from an italian team's perspective...... they teach defending like its as natural as breathing... you get someone with Gooch's physical ability and teach him the finer points of the game from a defending standpoint and we'll see him grow quite nicely... he may not get the PT we want the first season but he will develope.... plus with all the USMN games showcasing his ability..... ive always thought him to be a liability, but in previous games and the prospect of Serie A training, i think he could turn into a beast if he adapts his game
