USC commitment tops list

It's not always clear what you're getting when you recruit a high school football player, even a blue chip one, because it's a different, faster game on the college level. So we need some guidance. That's where the recruiting services come in. Athlon Sports polled six of the best ones (including PrepStar, Rivals, Scout, Max Emfinger and OD) to compile a list of the top 100 recruits in 2009. And the consensus No. 1 player? Santa Ana Mater Dei High quarterback Matt Barkley. The 6-foot-4, 226-pounder has committed to USC. Among the highest-ranked defensive linemen is 6-3, 280-pound Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin (Texas) High, who reportedly has Louisiana State, Texas and Oklahoma on his list.

And look up what USC has done, underachieving isn't the word to use. You but be thinking about your 6th grade report card.

Looks like someone else had (or is having) a tough time in 6th grade.

Sometimes they go to Notre Dame.

"LSU* - "Jamarcus Mcfarlarnd belongs to LSU, back off" ....Just like Joe McKnight? If he is smart, he would stay in Texas. Who would ever want to go to LSU? How dreary!!!

J. HOVA: BROOKLYN'S OWN

Mater Dei *QBS* will go to USC. MD is the class of high school FB in LA and there is a pipeline to USC. It might as well be the farm team for USC.

August 25, 2008  10:32 AM ET

PS buckeyedude is right that the QBs go to other schools as well and I guess i'm thinking of Leinart more than Brennan or Clausen. These are all very pass-happy QBs. Barkley's is an interesting story.

Bill Wrigley - hands down, worst comment on here in a while. No one needs to rattle off the six straight 11-win seasons (record), six-straight BCS bowls (record), two national championships (AP), three heismans (tied for most), or all the draftees... blah blah blah. good try though.
