Burnett to Yankees or Cards?

There was a buzz in the Yankee clubhouse Thursday among a couple of players who feel Blue Jays righty A.J. Burnett (16-9, 4.51), who has an opt-out clause in his contract, is very interested in New York next season. There were reports earlier this season that Burnett, an Arkansas native, would love to play in St. Louis. The Blue Jays would likely have to redo his contract for him to stay, and it's debatable as to whether they would.

New York would eat this guy up. His inconsistency would have Yanks fans all over him. Remember, despite his impressive run over the last 6 weeks, he is a career .500 pitcher. The Yanks would be pulling another Pavano here by giving this guy big money.

I can see the Yankees overpaying him, sure. Sounds like a good fit.

Hell, where else can someone get paid $40 mil to start, oh say, 20 games? Hell, I'd be all over that too.

The Yankees aren't offering more then 3/45

Face it folks. After the Yankees either miss the play-offs or lose in the ALDS, that Steinbrenner checkbook will know no limits. The evil empire will be as out of control as ever this winter with signings - thus justifying the hatred for the uber-capitalist swines with a 10-year plus underachieving product on the field.

OK, here comes the abuse... I asked for it.

The only team he pitches well against is the Yankees and that's only when he can manage to stay healthy. Let em go to the Cards.

In truth, the Steinbrenner's have given up on the season..Don't believe all the BS comments you hear them say to avoid criticism.

I think he could end up in STL. For some reason, Duncan has always been very interested in him. The Cards went hard after him 3 years ago when he ended up signing with Toronto.

August 24, 2008  11:49 AM ET

He ends up in Toronto.

August 24, 2008  12:08 PM ET

If Duncan gets a hold of this guy he'll win 20 games a year.

August 24, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Yea just like Carpenter,Wainwright did too?!?!?! He will end up in...........STL

August 24, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Burnett's situation is somewhat like Carp's Pitching in Toronto, struggling to stay healthy, great arm and stuff, usually around .500, considered an underperformer. I agree that Dunc could work wonders with Burnett.

I don't think AJ has Carp's competitive nature, but their situations are similar.

I agree. The NY media will destroy this guy's career. He would probably be worse than Pavano. We have enough overpaid underachievers on this team. We don't need another Jeff Weaver. Besides the Cards need all the help they can get. Cashman will have tons of $$ this offseason. He needs to deliver, big-time.

August 24, 2008  08:25 PM ET

Burnett is overrated and overpaid.

August 24, 2008  08:55 PM ET

I like Burnett and think he could be good for the Cards but I don't think he will take a discount to come here. Also his history makes it more likely the Cards will pass on him.

I think he'd be more like Randy Johnson. Not quite what you expect him to be and probably likely to push a cameraman when he arrives to thunderace applause.

August 24, 2008  09:19 PM ET

Sounds like Burnett asked questions around the batting cage, picking brains. He's good against the Yanks but he gets hurt alot.

August 24, 2008  10:49 PM ET

With a new stadium and an under-producing array of performers, Steinee no doubt will pony up big $$$$ for (i) a pitcher (probably Burnett if he chooses, (ii) Texeira... the $$$ will be so overwhelming that he will not refuse tho he does like the Angels for a variey of reasons, and (iii) the ManRam....tho most would believe this to be unlikely for the obviious reasons. The Dodgers simply will not pay, but when all is said and done, the Yankees will. ...assuming Tex opts not to come...Then Boros will take the Steinee $$$ for Manny probably against the wishes of Cashman who could well be gone if he objects too vehemently. Manny is good buddies with A-Rat and could well provide him with the same support he gave Ortiz. We will see, but plainly Steinee will spend big $$$$$ to open the new park follwing the first seaonin 14 that the Bombers do not play in October.

They might sign him just so he doesn't pitch against them. But I'd rather see them pay double for Doc Halladay!
