A prominent GM whose team is in need of pitching said he will not pursue Milwaukee free agents CC Sabathia or Ben Sheets. "Sabathia's body scares me; he's almost 300 pounds," said the GM. "Sheets has put together a good season, but his history of injuries makes it tough to commit that kind of money to."

Dodgers is CC new team next year!! He is a SoCal boy and love to bat.

August 24, 2008  07:21 AM ET

Oh, @#@$ the Yankees!!!!!

August 24, 2008  07:36 AM ET

why would a GM be worried about CC's weight? He's 6' 7". Plus, he is a 28 year old left hander with a 114-71 career record who has pitched close to 200 innings each of the last 8 seasons. Sounds like he's managing the weight just fine....

114-71 career record for a 6' 7" 28 year old lefthander? 180+ innings for 8 straight years. what is this 'prominent' GM worried about...

Who is this mysterious prominent GM again?

He's from Vallejo. Last time I checked, that was not in SoCal ...

Ben Sheets has missed an average of 14 starts a season in the previous three seasonss before this year. I wouldn't sign Sheets either.

August 24, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Have you people forgotten last postseason already?

CC threw a career high in innings and fell apart in the playoffs.
He's on pace for a similar insane 240ish innings this year, he's been amazing with the Brewers but to forget his production earlier this year with Cleveland and the latter half of last year is myopic.

I bet that the mysterious GM is Frank Wren.He is eyeing Ryan Dempster and Adam Dunn.He could also go for Jon Garland or Derek Lowe

August 24, 2008  03:32 PM ET

I tend to agree with that. Sabathia better sign with the Yankees where they tolerate and like lardbutt players. If he goes south to play in the heat, he will need to drop 50 lbs and push himself away from the dinner table. Sheets is a gamble. Good when he is good...bad when he is hurt.

August 24, 2008  04:12 PM ET

A GM could put together a really good rotation this offseason with the free agent guys. If a team can get two - say, Sabathia and Lowe, or Sheets and Garland - it would change most any team in the majors. Just to get Sabathia will be a difference maker.

August 24, 2008  05:34 PM ET

Overweight? That's 300 pounds of 114 wins and 71 losses, 180 innings per yr the last 8yrs, and not to mention not being injured as much as Sheets. I think he'll fit just fine on the Yanks. As long as he doesn't walk around like a drunk and start bar fights like the last fat boy who pitched in NY. But hell, that didn't stop HIM from pitching well either.

August 24, 2008  07:53 PM ET

Why is it that nowadays 240 innings is "insane"? Are players so fragile now? I recall when guys would go 300+ innings, 40 starts and 15-20 complete games every year.

August 24, 2008  08:15 PM ET

HA HA Funk - I thought the same thing - sounds like Ruben Amaro/ Pat Gillick

It's impressive that you can mix so much **** and the word myopic.

August 24, 2008  08:52 PM ET

You can't blame a team for passing on either of these guys, especially Sheets, for the money both will demand. Sabathia, weight and all, is definitely the better pickup of the two though.

Luckily baseball keeps track of these things so we can refer to them rather than attempting to be snarky and pretend they never happened. After throwing a career high in innings last year here's what CC did in the postseason.

15.1 IP, 12.33 H/9, 15 ER, 9:7 K/BB, if you look at the game logs there is a clear regression as the PAP add up in the regular season as well.

Will CC be as poor as that towards the end of this season and in the playoffs? Maybe, I wouldn't bet on it. But I imagine his performance will much more clearly resemble the 114 ERA+, and 1.23 WHIP he put up with Cleveland earlier this year rather than his otherworldy CY caliber numbers with the Brew Crew thus far.
