Rockets keep close eye on Yao

USA Basketball trainer Keith Jones had two very important jobs that kept his hands full during the Olympics. Jones is also the Rockets' vice president of basketball operations/athletic trainer, so he was keeping tabs on Yao Ming, who returned to action for his native China after his NBA season ended prematurely because of a fractured left foot. "I checked in with him to see how he was doing," Jones said. "He wasn't having any pain. I was asking him about the swelling. He said, 'It's not as much as it used to be. It's a little puffy after practice. I put it in an ice bucket and the next morning I'm fine.' " Considering that this was Yao's fourth major injury in two years, it's understandable that the Rockets are so concerned. Rockets assistant coach Jack Sikma, assistant trainer Keith Garnett, and a physical therapist went to China to work out Yao before the Games. Jones said Chinese team officials gladly accepted "plain instructions" not to overwork Yao, who averaged 19 points and 8.2 rebounds at the Olympics.

Now that the Olympics are over, Yao can concentrate on rehab. The Rockets will be heard from this year, and Yao should be a big part of that.

Yao isn't going to play 82 games this season. He just isn't.

August 24, 2008  10:33 AM ET

He didn't get the rest he needed this offseason. It's hard to not see him getting hurt or just running out of gas late in the season.

August 24, 2008  11:36 AM ET

He'll be out by January. His body is just too soft.

They should have not let him play.
Forbid him, whatever, he's rehabbing and you let him re stress his foot?

Dude; you don't seem to understand, Yao had NO CHOICE in playing. Yao is OWNED by the Chinese government. He is on loan to the NBA. The league understood this from the very beginning. The Rockets are doing the only thing they can do, which is to monitor his rehab, and hope for the best.

Kidd Giving Gold Medal To Wynn's Wife

Aug 24, 2008 12:56 PM EST
Elaine Wynn, who is married to casino owner Steve Wynn, was promised by Jason Kidd that he would give her his newest Olympic medal if the Americans won the gold.

"It's not a (gambling) marker or anything like that," Kidd told The Arizona Republic. "She's just a great friend and a really great person."

They met last year when Kidd and the USA team stayed at the Wynn while training in Las Vegas.

"Last summer, we stayed at the Wynn for (what seemed like) a lifetime, close to three weeks," Kidd said. "We met at a banquet, we got to talking, and she really understands the game.

"I told her I'd make a deal with her, that if we won the gold medal, I'd give it to her. She thought I was kidding. But I told her I had one already, and the way they treated us at the Wynn, it was the least I could do."

I understand that, but I'm sure they gave him some option of not playing. He should have taken it since his team clearly did not want him to play...

No; that's my point. There was no option. If Yao had crossed them, he'd be DEAD before the end of the season.
