Mears blames spotter for wreck

The words were simple, but telling: "I wasn't clear." That's all Casey Mears could muster sitting in his wrecked No.5 Chevrolet after he cut off Michael Waltrip, causing a seven-car pileup that collected two drivers -- Kasey Kahne and Clint Bowyer -- still trying to fight their way into the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Carl Edwards won the race. Mears passed Waltrip on Lap 217 of Saturday night's Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Turn 1. Just as he did, Mears' spotter, Eddie Masencup, said 'Clear, clear' over the radio, but Mears wasn't. He turned into Waltrip's No. 55 Toyota which ignited the multi-car wreck that required a nearly 13-minute red-flag to clean the track of debris. "I like my spotter; he's a good guy, but man that was ridiculous," Mears said after the wreck. "We took a bunch of cars out for no reason. I was just running along, heard 'clear, clear' and went up there and there was someone (Waltrip) still there. "I'm pretty upset about it. There were a lot of people that got involved in that which shouldn't have been involved because it shouldn't have happened." Also involved in the wreck were Robby Gordon, Reed Sorenson and Sam Hornish Jr. Kahne and Bowyer had the most to lose.

You know, it's hard to take Kasey Kahne seriously as a face of Budweiser in NASCAR. I noticed during an interview with one of the female reporters that, not only did his hat look two sizes to big, but he was about 5 inches shorter than the woman. Bud just took a man-point hit. And, come on, Kasey with a "K"? How juinor high.

August 24, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Ouch - a hit in the man-point. All these dudes are small.

August 24, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Really hoah05, these guys are almost all midgets.
How did jr do last night? Probably should have kept his trap shut this week, eh? Karma is a beetch.

Should be lot's of fun watching Opie and the Shrub battle for the Championship. I would hope that recent events would lay to rest all the Toyota/Nascar conspiracy bull, but somehow I get the feeling when Shrub wins again all that lunacy will surface once more.

Kind of ironic to see KB racing Opie clean, only to be the victim of an Earnhart special. Wonder if the KB haters will give the kid any credit for not running Edwards off the track when he had the chance. Doubt it.

Did I already ask how jr did last night? What a maroon!

Kasey seems like a nice kid, but you've got a better chance of seeing a C-17 actually land on a Carrier

Ever watch Bugs Bunny?

August 24, 2008  12:21 PM ET

So Casey finally get to blame somebody else besides himself, what a loser.

August 24, 2008  12:38 PM ET

It was an entertaining race, I'll say that. From Bowyer saying that Waltrip was the worst driver in NASCAR to the crowd cheering when Edwards spun out Busch on the cool down lap. I had a great time watching.

August 24, 2008  12:51 PM ET

Yea, I can't believe they Black Flagged JR, who do they think they are anyway?
LOL

I Mean, he didn't pass the pace car, what was the big deal?
