Blackhawks in Chelios' future

Aren't they satisfied with poaching Scotty Bowman? Chris Chelios had his time with the Stanley Cup last week and took it to his hometown of Chicago. Of course, he was asked if he'd like to come back and finish his career there. "You don't want to hurt anyone's feelings," Chelios told the Chicago Tribune. "I found a new home in Detroit, but Chicago is always going to be home. My parents still live here, and I intend on coming back home here some day and spending the rest of my days here, whether it's as a player or somehow being involved with the Blackhawks."

Ahhhh, say this isn't true! First the B'Hawks steal Scotty from us... now Cheli??

ahhhhhhhh back from vacation and not much new on the site I see....

I like Cheli but his time is coming to an end. He knows it as well. I look for him to retire either this year or next. He keeps himself in top condition but his body is getting older....won't bounce back like it did before. Look for the Wings to bring up some of the talent they have in GR. I wouldn't be suprised to see Cheli back with the Hawks but I think it's going to be in street clothes...not uniform.

Cheli's a HoF'er for sure, but it seems like he's so much in love with the game that he just cant stand to retire. Why doesn't he ask for a role as a coach or something? That way he would still be putting on them skates in practice and feel the pressure and heat of the game behind the bench. I'm sure either the Hawks or Wings would love to have someone like him on their staff.

But another year? No... he's to old, even if his mind is into it, his body isn't. There's lots of fights to fight, but against Father Time you'll eventually lose. Time for Cheli to realize that, and realize that he got a place in hockey, but it's not on the ice.

As an avid WingNut, I have deeply appreciated Cheli's contribution to the Wings, to hockey, and to both Detroit and Chicago redevelopment. If he and the Wings can work something out, I would be happy to have a player of his skill and integrity (either on the ice, on the bench, or in the office).

If he ends up going to his first love of Chicago in any capacity, I wish him well and hope that he continues to think of Motown as his second home.

Thanks, Chris, for all you have done for all people, for the Wings, for Detroit, and for hockey.

It sounded to me he just asked for a job. anyway a great career.

August 24, 2008  06:14 PM ET

Maybe he could be a vendor, and work his way up to the bobble head concession? That's where the big bucks are!

August 24, 2008  06:46 PM ET

Was a favorite in Chicago when he was there but just can't see him lacing up the skates at 40 something. Maybe he has a year left as a role player. However it happens it would be nice to see him somewhere in the organization.

Didn't NHL Network report yesterday that he had agreed on a contract with the Wings?

Naw...he still hasn't signed. He did say in an interview yesterday (Saturday) that he is close to a new deal with the Wings though.

Excellent evaluations above me in the posts here. Sad though. A career fades and the adolescents will see this as some kind of Hawk victory o'er the Wings.

How about chelios leading the players union.

Blackhawks in Chelios' future

Only to serve the current Hawks players drinks and hot wings in Chely's Bar after practices!

The 'hawks need something to rebuild the dynasty. Scotty Bowman is a start. Great young players but a lack of leadership. Despite Chelios "maturity" he could be a great addition to the lineup. Its a great move.

Not so! They have a young "Moose" in Jonathan Toews! He reminds me so much of Mark Messier in his younger days that it's scary! He is the right guy to wear the "C" on his chest!

And, it doesn't hurt that they have All-Stars Duncan Keith and Brian Campbell either! This bunch will grow together, gell together and win together. Chelios doesn't have much to contribute at this stage!

I think Chelios would be a good coach. His p/t playing last year was the writing on the wall though.

August 25, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Bobbleheads people! That's where the money is.

August 25, 2008  10:09 PM ET

Um I think the wings stole him from the hawks!

Don't think you could find a better representative.

He'd be a great coach at the minor league level. The knowledge he could pass on to the young guys is priceless.
